MetroPCS breaks 1 million LTE customers, makes $193 million profit despite losing 312,000 users in Q3

MetroPCS breaks 1 million LTE subscribers, makes a $193 million profit in Q3 2012

MetroPCS might be the smaller of the two parties in the proposed merger with T-Mobile, but it certainly knows how to coin a profit in difficult times. The carrier recorded a massive $193 million net profit this quarter, $44 million more than it made in Q2, despite losing 312,000 subscribers in the three month period. The reason behind the rosy numbers was a combination of cash-saving exercises and canny investments in securities, pushing total revenue to $1.3 billion. The network now has just under nine million customers, with more than a million of those subscribing to one of the company's LTE packages. It's also managed to reduce churn down to 3.7 percent, a reduction of 0.8 percent since Q3 2011. CEO Roger D. Linquist remarked that the next quarter will see the business "re-energize" subscriber growth at the expense of its bottom line -- probably wise, given that it's lost just over half a million customers in the last six months.

Jessica Bridges and her three-year-old daughter Madison Bridges place flowers at a growing shrine for Autumn Pasquale Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, in Clayton, N.J., near where the missing 12-year-old girl's body was found in a home's recycling bin. The body of Autumn Pasquale was found around 10 p.m. Monday, just blocks away from her house. Two teenage brothers were charged Tuesday with murdering Pasquale who had been missing since the weekend, prompting a frantic search by her small hometown until her body was found stuffed into a home recycling bin. Family friend Daniel Kuehnl pauses Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, in Clayton, N.J., as he stands near a memorial shrine for Autumn Pasquale, while announcing funeral arrangements on Saturday, for the missing 12-year-old girl whose body was found in a home's recycling bin. (AP Photo/Mel Evans)

(AP) ? Something struck Toni Fiorella whenever she would see a mother from her hometown drop two teenage sons off at the laundromat to do the family's wash. She didn't know them by name, but they were always respectful. Their mother must be on to something, Fiorella thought.

"It's good," she said. "She's making them responsible."

Now, authorities say, those same boys are accused of killing a 12-year-old neighborhood girl and stuffing her body into a recycling bin near their home. Authorities say she was lured with the promise of new parts for the beloved bicycle she was riding before she disappeared.

Some of the 8,000 residents of Clayton saw the boys as Fiorella did, many others as troublesome teens with reputations for stealing bikes. But even some of those who saw a lawless side of the 15- and 17-year-old brothers have a hard time imagining them committing such a violent crime.

Sixteen-year-old Na'eem Williams, who described himself as a close friend of the 15-year-old, said that he knew the brothers to take bicycles but that it was a leap to think them capable of a horrendous crime.

"I know they didn't do nothing like that," he said. "I know they couldn't, especially not with a young girl."

Authorities have not discussed a motive and have not released the names of the brothers because they are charged as juveniles. The Associated Press is withholding them for the same reason.

Deputy Public Defender Jeffrey Wintner said his office was representing both defendants, though a private attorney had been assigned to handle one of the cases. He said the office would have no comment.

The boys were charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in the death of Autumn Pasquale, a well-known and well-liked seventh-grader who disappeared Saturday afternoon in the town 25 miles south of Philadelphia. Her body was found Monday night in the recycling bin behind a vacant house next to the boys' home.

Autumn's mother, Jennifer Cornwell, told reporters Tuesday that she felt as though her daughter had been treated "like a piece of trash" because of where her body was recovered. The girl's father, Anthony Pasquale, a postal worker in Clayton, said he is familiar with the family of the suspects.

"Everybody knows everybody," in the town of 8,000, he said, "whether they're friends or acquaintances."

The boys, who have other brothers who are not charged in the case, were themselves seen at a vigil held Monday night for Autumn. The younger boy apparently exchanged messages with Autumn's teenage brother on Facebook on Sunday.

The brother, A.J. Pasquale, wrote on his page that police, search dogs and the media were involved in the search. "thts good," was the reply from an account that appeared to belong to the 15-year-old suspect.

People who know the boys say the younger suspect is a sophomore at Clayton High School and has been on the wrestling team. The older boy, they say, attends Bankbridge Developmental Center in Sewell, a school for students with social, behavioral and academic problems. He was seen outside the family's home less often, neighbors say.

Beverly Davis said she went to school with Autumn's father and the suspects' mother.

"We are not surprised by who the suspects were," Davis said. "We're not surprised at all. They're not always on the right side of the law."

Davis said one boy stole one of her children's bikes. And the boys' father told the Star-Ledger newspaper of Newark that their sons were known for stealing bikes, and that one son had previously been charged with theft.

Naomi Sampson, 76, said that her family has had a home for a century half a block from the boys' home ? and that the boys' family has lived there about as long. She saw the boys grow up, she said.

"We know they're troubled," she said.

But others who observed the boys found them to act the right way around adults, to smile and be courteous. Fiorella, for example, said she thought it was unusual to see two teenage boys doing laundry.

Authorities say their mother saw something in one of their Facebook postings that gave her cause to call police Monday. It was that call, officials said, that led investigators to the body and her sons.

She has not returned messages from the AP. The boys' father told reporters that he has not seen the boys in a year and has not seen much of them in the past seven years or so.

The teens are due in court Friday for a hearing to determine whether they are to remain in custody. Prosecutors say they may ask that the case be moved to adult court.

Both boys are charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, disposing of a body, tampering with evidence and theft. The younger boy is also charged with luring, allegedly telling Autumn to come over to trade bike parts.

Funeral services for Autumn are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Glassboro, following a public viewing at 8 a.m.

A Warming Detox Breakfast For a Fresh Start on Chilly Mornings ...

Sometimes nights out lead to mornings filled with dietary regret. If that?s the case, then you?ll want to help undo the bad with a healthful breakfast made of detoxifying foods. With chilly mornings a near certainty for the next few months, a breakfast that warms you while helping you get off to a good start is in order, so here?s a warming detox breakfast to make the next time you feel bloated and blah from the night before. Oatmeal with fresh fruit: Whole grains help regulate your digestive tract, a major key in a detoxifying diet. Choose a bowl of natural, plain oatmeal ? not the prepackaged sugary kind ? and add slices of apple or another Fall fruit. Fresh fruit contains high levels of antioxidants and fiber, which help flush toxins from your body. Get more healthful oatmeal recipes here . Green tea with lemon: Green tea contains high levels of catechins , which speed up liver activity and promote the production of detoxifying enzymes. Add a squeeze of lemon for an alkalizing kick. Ginger green juice: Need extra detoxifying help? Whip up this spicy green juice ; while it?s served cold, the addition of ginger to the simple recipe warms your body, and the lemon, ginger, and parsley in the juice all help your body detox. Make this in the morning, and take it along with you to work in a mason jar for a midmorning pick-me-up. Photo: Jenny Sugar

Fans celebrate as Giants advance to World Series

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The streets of San Francisco filled up with wet, but happy baseball fans late Monday after the San Francisco Giants clobbered the St. Louis Cardinals to clinch the National League pennant.

Following a 9-0 win over the Cardinals in the seventh and deciding game of the NL championship series, San Francisco fans took to the streets and celebrated their team's return to the World Series.

A driving rain that began drenching the crowd late in the game did not seem to be dampen the spirit of the fans, many outfitted in orange Giants gear.

Ecstatic ? and wet ? fans told television cameras that although they were drenched, they didn't mind. Cheers and car horns blasting could be heard for blocks from AT&T Park.

After the final out, virtually the entire sellout crowd remained in their seats as the Giants celebrated on the field and fireworks burst overhead.

The victory and celebrations came after concerns the final game might be rained out. Despite heavy showers early Monday and a brief cloudburst just before it started, the game went on without delay.

The Giants will play the Detroit Tigers in the first game Wednesday in San Francisco.

The final league record of 7W-1L-6T earned the Heat the second seed in the PACWEST provincial championship and landed the team in the semi-final versus the home team, Quest.

Quest was able to defeat Kwantlen 3-0 on the last day of the season to secure a berth into the championships in a play or go home game in Squamish on Sunday. With the win on the final day Quest?s final record was 7W-5L-2T.

The Friday night match will follow the women?s bout and will start at 8 p.m. at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops.

The same two teams will do it again Saturday night in Kelowna at 7 p.m. for the UBC Okanagan home opener.

Live webcasts of both Friday and Saturday?s matches will be on www.canadawest.tv

Men?s Rugby ? This weekend will mark the second annual Hindson Cup, an invitational rugby tournament named in honour of Canadian and Okanagan rugby legend Ro Hindson, a member of the BC Rugby Hall of Fame.

The Cup will be a one day tournament with three games for UBC Okanagan. The first two games for the Heat will be at 11 a.m. versus Mount Royal and then immediately following the Heat will play Washington State University. The morning games will be shortened in length to accommodate all of the teams. The preliminary part of the Cup will be played at the Parkinson Fields.

The top two teams from the morning will match up in the Cup final at 3:20 p.m. in the Apple Bowl, while the consolation will be played on the Apple Bowl just prior to the final, starting at 2:30 p.m.

Cross Country (CCAA ranking: Women No. 3, Men No. 10) ? The Provincial Cross Country Championships will act as the unofficial PACWEST championship race. 2013 Low Cost Business Ideas: Protecting Online Reputations One ...

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct 22, 2012 -
One of the most popular new 2013 low cost business ideas (http://mcqueenathome.com/2013-low-cost-business-ideas/) is expected to be reputation management services. This is an area that has huge room for growth according to industry insiders because of the huge demand for the service. Businesses have become very conscious of the importance of their online reputation and have started to realize that they have to take steps to manage it. The industry is even starting to see individuals looking for reputation management services due to the number of employers who do an online search before making a job offer.

The businesses that are in the best position to move into reputation management services are the ones who are already operating in the search engine optimization (SEO) field. Search engine optimization is the business of getting websites to rank near the top of the search results. Over the last few years this business has become less profitable due to improvements in the quality of the search engines leaving less room for manipulation of the results. The same skills that are used for SEO can be transferred to reputation management and many search engine optimization companies are doing just that. At the same time experts point out that the barriers to entry are quite low so almost anybody with the necessary skills can enter this industry for which there is currently a huge demand.

The other industry that experts are expecting to boom over the next few years is in protecting content on the internet. It is widely known that plagiarism is major problem online due to website content being so easy to steal. This has created a new industry getting sites that use stolen content to remove it. It is widely believed that most of the content that gets posted online will eventually be reused by somebody who does not have legal rights to it so there is a huge potential market.

Getting stolen content removed from the internet is not difficult to do; all that is required is a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notice. This is a notice that is sent to the internet service provider of the offending site, at which point the content will either be removed or the site shut down. The challenge for most content owners is monitoring the web to make sure their content has not been stolen. This provides an opportunity for companies to offer that service.

The business of monitoring the web and sending out DMCA notices is one for which there is currently far more demand than there are companies that offer the service according to experts in the field. This combined with the low startup costs has led many online business experts to recommend that people looking to start a low cost online business consider a DMCA notice service.

Syrian warplanes strike rebel-held town in north

FILE - In this Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 file photo, A Free Syrian Army fighter fires his weapon at Syrian Army positions in Aleppo, Syria. Piece by piece, Syria's rebels are slowly starting to expand their arsenal and get their hands on more advanced weapons, something that has been their constant aim in the 19-month-old uprising against the regime of President Bashar Assad. The process still appears to be haphazard and improvised: Far from a reliable, organized pipeline, it often remains a scramble by individual units in the highly fragmented rebel forces to obtain what they can. (AP) ? Syrian warplanes on Tuesday struck a strategic rebel-held town in the country's north in an attempt to reopen a key supply route, activists said, as a U.N.-proposed cease-fire meant to start this week appeared increasingly unlikely to take hold.

The U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria has suggested that both sides in Syria's 19-month-old conflict lay down their arms during Eid al-Adha, a four-day Muslim holiday that begins Friday. However, neither Syrian President Bashar Assad nor rebels fighting to topple him have committed to a truce, and international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has not said how such a truce would be monitored.

Syria's stalemated civil war, which has frequently spilled over Syria's borders and threatens to destabilize an already volatile region, featured prominently in the final pre-election debate Monday in the U.S. between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney,

Both men said they would not send American troops to Syria, but Romney pledged to help arm rebels after vetting the intended recipients, earning him praise from Syrian opposition leaders. Obama warned of the risk of giving the rebels heavy weapons that could fall into the wrong hands and later be used against the U.S. or its allies.

"By not arming the (rebel) Free Syrian Army with heavy weapons, he (Obama) is giving Assad the upper hand," said Muhieddine Lathkani, a member of the Syrian National Council, an umbrella of opposition groups.

The rebels have said they need heavier weapons to counter Assad's military superiority, particular from the air. Since the summer, the regime has increasingly pounded rebel positions with warplanes and helicopter gunships.

On Tuesday, government aircraft attacked Maaret al-Numan and the village of Mar Shamsheh, as troops and rebels battled over a nearby Syrian military camp that has been under siege for days, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The activist group reported more than two dozen casualties among the rebels, but did not have the breakdown of killed and wounded.

Opposition fighters seized Maaret al-Numan, which lies along the main highway between Aleppo and Damascus, earlier this month. Their presence has disrupted the regime's ability to send supplies and reinforcements to the northwest. This has hampered the government's fight in Aleppo, where troops are bogged down in a bloody fight for control of the country's largest city.

Amateur video posted Monday showed rebel fighters unleashing heavy bursts of machine-gun fire, apparently at a convoy heading to the besieged army camp. Syria restricts access to foreign reporters and the authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed.

An international human rights group, meanwhile, said the Syrian air force stepped up attacks with cluster bombs in the past two weeks, dropping more over a wider area, despite Damascus' denials that it has used the widely banned munitions.

Cluster bombs open in flight, scattering smaller bomblets over a wide area. Many of the bomblets don't explode immediately, posing a threat to civilians long afterward.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch, citing amateur videos and interviews with victims, residents and activists, said it has received new information about more than 35 sites where cluster bombs were dropped.

The violence in Syria has killed more than 34,000 people, said Observatory chief Rami Abdul-Rahman, whose group relies on a network of activists on the ground. This figure includes civilians and rebel fighters, but also more than 8,000 regime soldiers, he said.

Abdul-Rahman said there were no signs on inside Syria that rebels or government troops were preparing to halt fighting during Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.

Abdelbaset Sieda, the head of the Syrian National Council, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that rebel fighters are willing to halt fighting during the holiday, but will respond if attacked. He said he doubts the regime will honor the cease-fire and that Brahimi's plan is too vague.

"Brahimi hasn't any mechanism to observe the situation," Sieda said by phone from Stockholm, Sweden. "Now he is saying every side can do that (halt fighting) by itself."

In Damascus, Syria's deputy foreign minister, Faisal Mekdad, said the Assad regime is cooperating with Brahimi. "We are always optimistic," he said when asked about the chances of a cease-fire.

However, Brahimi said after a visit to Damascus on Sunday that he did not get a commitment to the truce from the regime.

The relentless fighting in Syria has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee the country to escape the violence.

The U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday that Lebanon has become the third Syrian neighbor to host more than 100,000 refugees from Syria's civil war.

At least 101,283 people have registered as refugees in Lebanon, said agency spokeswoman Melissa Fleming. This compares to more than 105,000 in Jordan, at least 101,000 in Turkey, more than 42,000 in Iraq and 6,800 in North Africa.

Governments bordering Syria estimate tens of thousands more Syrian refugees have not yet registered, including an estimated 70,000 in Turkey who live outside refugee camps, she said.

Jordan alone says it hosting some 210,000 Syrian refugees, which Amman says has strained the country's health care, water and electricity sectors.

Breast cancer, early detection saves lives | Zambia Daily Mail

A PATIENT being screend at Lusaka's University Teaching Hospital.

By DOREEN NAWA
EARLY detection of breast cancer through routine examinations saves thousands of lives every year.
And this is the message that the Cancer Diseases Hospital would like to run with this month of October.
As Zambia joins the rest of the world to commemorating the month of October as the Breast Cancer Month, Cancer Diseases Hospital executive director Kennedy Lishimpi?s message to the country is simple?.routine examinations.
Routine examinations can be clinical breast examination or breast self-examination.
Dr Lishimpi says, ?Studies have shown that early detection of breast cancer improves the chances of a cure. That in itself is the most important reason to make an appointment today for a breast examinations or mammogram or do it yourself at home. Early diagnosis of any kind of cancer is the way to a better cure.?
Although there has not yet been any survey countrywide to get correct data on breast cancer, the incidence of breast cancer in Zambia and the mortality rate is worrisome.
Evidenced from the influx of patients flocking to the Cancer Diseases Hospital for breast cancer treatment, it is no doubt that action has to be taken.
As the old adage goes, ?Your health is in your hands?, it is important for any person to regularly check and monitor any changes in their bodies.
According to Dr Lishimpi ,it is important for any person to carry out breast self-examinations.
Dr Lishimpi said, ?Breast self-examination (BSE) or regularly examining your breasts on your own, can be an important way to find a breast cancer early and when detected, it is more likely to be treated successfully. Breast self-examination is done once a month. If you notice a growth in your breast, please get medical attention although not every growth is cancerous.?
According to Dr Lishimpi, breast self-examination is done by one feeling their breasts.
Breast self-examinations
Although there has been a lot of heated debate in the research and medical communities about the usefulness of breast self-exams in detecting breast cancer in the early stages, there is enough compelling data to indicate that self-exams are still effective in helping us stay aware of any changes that may be a cause for concern.
Dr Lishimpi says it is easier to feel breast tissue using breast self-examination as it spreads more evenly and is at its thinnest.
?If you have not done these tests yet, get started now.? Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we will be carrying out free mammograms and clinical breast examinations in all the government clinics and hospitals,? Dr Lishimpi said.
According to Dr Lishimpi, breast self-examination plays a small role in finding breast cancer compared with finding a breast lump by chance or simply being aware of what is normal for each woman.
?Not every lump or tumour is cancerous; most of the people that come here with suspected breast cancer have come to learn that it was not breast cancer but just a lump. Doing BSE regularly is one way for people to know how their breasts normally look and feel and to notice any changes. The goal, with or without BSE, is to report any breast changes to a doctor or nurse right away,? Dr Lishimpi says.
Clinical breast examinations
According to Dr Lishimpi, another type of breast examination is not optional and should be done regularly.
It is called the clinical breast examination and basically means getting your breasts checked by a qualified health professional like a nurse or a doctor.
?It is a great way to ensure that everything?s okay, as well as an opportunity to discuss wellness options with your doctor and ask questions, address concerns and clarify doubts. You can also review your self-examination technique and get important feedback,? Dr Lishimpi says.
As the country joins the rest of the world in commemorating October as the Breast Cancer Month, all government clinics will be providing free services on breast cancer detection. Breast cancer is the most curable form of cancer and early detection is the key.
When asked why the intense interest in informing people about breast cancer, Dr Lishimpi said because it is a disease that often can be detected early and successfully treated.
?The benefits of detecting any kind of cancer early are a lot and chances of surviving are high when it is detected at its early stage. But if left untreated too long, however, the disease becomes virtually unbeatable. When breast cancer is diagnosed early, 93 percent of its victims survive,? Dr Lishimpi said
Dr Lishimpi says after the age of 40, it is important for women to undergo annual mammogram screenings.
?A mammogram is basically an X-ray of your breast. It is especially useful in cases where there appear to be no breast problems. Mammogram screenings have proven to be most effective in breast cancer detection and are thus an important part of any breast cancer awareness programme,? Dr Lishimpi says.
And Cancer Diseases Hospital mammographer Mercy Chipampe said programmme aimed at? raising awareness about breast cancer, the major killer of women, are in progress. ,

Cancer Diseases Hospital mammographer Mercy Chipampe.

Mrs Chipampe also put emphasis on self-examination. ?Self-examination is the most basic level of protection. If you are uncertain how to check, ask any health care professional. In this month of October, the Cancer Diseases Hospital will be conducting breast cancer screening free of charge.?
She said regular mammograms and examinations by health care professionals also are critical safeguards.
?The great tragedy of breast cancer is that it is so easy to detect and can be treated so effectively ? yet it kills so many women. That is why it is important for everyone to participate in campaigns to raise awareness of the disease and what can be done to combat it,? Mrs Chipampe says.
Unlike lung and liver cancers, breast cancer is not as scary as people might think.
If women take care and check their breasts regularly, the cancer can be detected early, which gives a better chance not only of getting rid of the cancer, but also of preserving the affected breast.
Especially women in high-risk groups should have their breasts regularly examined.

Sabathia to have elbow checked by Andrews

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:53 p.m. ET Oct. 20, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Yankees ace CC Sabathia will have his pitching elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews following inflammation that landed him on the disabled list in August.

An MRI showed a bone spur in the left elbow and the Yankees believe it has existed since he pitched for the Cleveland Indians from 2001-08.

"Yeah, you have to be concerned, because like I've said, I've never had any problems with the elbow before," Sabathia said outside Yankee Stadium on Saturday, according to the New York Daily News. "We have to wait and see ... It's something that I've not felt before, never had, so it's best to go get it checked out and go from there."

Also Saturday, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter had surgery to repair a broken left ankle. Dr. Robert Anderson operated in Charlotte, N.C., and the Yankees said complete recovery for their 38-year-old captain is expected to take four-to-five months.

Jeter was injured last Saturday in the 12th inning of Game 1 of the AL championship series against Detroit while trying to field a grounder. The Tigers went on to sweep the Yankees.

Cyberbullying only rarely the sole factor identified in teen suicides

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2012) ? Cyberbullying -- the use of the Internet, phones or other technologies to repeatedly harass or mistreat peers -- is often linked with teen suicide in media reports. However, new research presented on Oct. 20, at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, shows that the reality is more complex. Most teen suicide victims are bullied both online and in school, and many suicide victims also suffer from depression.

For the abstract, "Cyberbullying and Suicide: A Retrospective Analysis of 41 Cases," researchers searched the Internet for reports of youth suicides where cyberbullying was a reported factor. Information about demographics and the event itself were then collected through searches of online news media and social networks. Finally, descriptive statistics were used to assess the rate of pre-existing mental illness, the co-occurrence of other forms of bullying, and the characteristics of the electronic media associated with each suicide case.

The study identified 41 suicide cases (24 female, 17 male, ages 13 to 18) from the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. In the study, 24 percent of teens were the victims of homophobic bullying, including the 12 percent of teens identified as homosexual and another 12 percent of teens who were identified as heterosexual or of unknown sexual preference.

Suicides most frequently occurred in September (15 percent) and January (12 percent) although these higher rates may have occurred by chance. The incidence of reported suicide cases increased over time, with 56 percent occurring from 2003 to 2010, compared to 44 percent from January 2011 through April 2012.

Seventy-eight percent of adolescents who committed suicide were bullied both at school and online, and only 17 percent were targeted online only. A mood disorder was reported in 32 percent of the teens, and depression symptoms in an additional 15 percent.

"Cyberbullying is a factor in some suicides, but almost always there are other factors such as mental illness or face-to-face bullying," said study author John C. LeBlanc, MD, MSc, FRCPC, FAAP. "Cyberbullying usually occurs in the context of regular bullying."

Cyberbullying occurred through various media, with Formspring and Facebook specifically mentioned in 21 cases. Text or video messaging was noted in 14 cases.

"Certain social media, by virtue of allowing anonymity, may encourage cyberbullying," said Dr. LeBlanc. "It is difficult to prove a cause and effect relationship, but I believe there is little justification for anonymity."

Article Body:
The call center business has become one of the fastest booming industries today. In the era of customer-oriented services, the provision for accessible support is now a priority. With many companies trying to cope up with their customers' needs and demands, the concept of the call center was born.

A call center normally operates with all its agents (or customer service representatives) in one central location. It is equipped to handle a large amount of transactions between customers and the call center agents. Transactions may be carried out through a variety of media. The telephone is the foremost form of communication in call centers today. However, transactions are also carried out via email and the live chat through the Internet.

Call centers offer a wide range of services. The first thought that comes to mind for many is support - product information, technical support, and all sorts of after sales services. However, call centers can offer more than that. They also deal with marketing and sales. Telemarketing is an aggressive form of selling your product and can yield very good results. Call centers cater to businesses which aim to increase their sales as well as provide customer services. One example would be credit card companies.

While aiming to provide information and assistance to customers, they can also increase their revenue through sales spiels given by their agents. Another service that can be dealt with by a call center is debt collection. Credit bureaus also make use of call centers to provide information on a person's credit rating. In effect, basically anything that has to do with your customers can be done through call centers.

What is the typical set up in a call center? The term call center brings up images of wide open work spaces, with small workstations containing a computer, headset, and telephone dialer. The practice is increasingly turning to the linking of data and voice in one pathway. This integration makes for more efficient work practices and is called Computer Telephony Integration (CTI). Individual agents are normally managed by a floor supervisor who also takes calls when the need arises.

Setting up a call center requires certain technology to be applied. There is a wide range of available technologies for call centers today. More often than not, different types of technologies are combined in order to achieve the most effective and efficient set up. The Computer Telephony Integration has already been mentioned is one of the trends in the business today. In fact, CTI is used to combine most applications used in call centers - voice, email, fax, and web. CTI provides many functions such as caller ID, on screen dialing, on screen phone controls (conference calls, hang up, hold, etc.), and agent status control (whether agent is available for calls or not).

With all these advances in technology and developments in consumer-oriented practices, the call center has emerged as an ideal solution for many companies. The call center provides standardized service to customers and helps cut the cost. In addition to that, the separate entity of the call center subtracts from the actual operational considerations of the company.

Comments - Travel Insurance - Travel Insurance Services

Submitted by Joe Cortez

TravelvoucherBy the way, I never told you how my trip to Richmond went, did I? It was a lot of fun! That is, until I had one amazing race to get back home. And I'm not talking about the fun one they show on TV. I'm talking about one where I had to go against our common foe: trip interruption.

The short of the story is: I arrived at the airport in Richmond in plenty of time to catch my flight out to Cleveland, and on to Columbus. The flight was oversold, and also heavily delayed?by Cleveland. My best bet?was to?reserve me a ticket on another flight going out the next day. I waited patiently, hoping that the trip delay would work itself out and I could still get home.?I was especially patient when I found out?I wasn't alone -?many others had a connection to make in Cleveland, and?at least 10?of them were going to Columbus.

Because of all the people depending on this flight, there was a small chance they would hold the plane for us at Cleveland and not have a major trip interruption on their hands. With boarding formalities skipped, we boarded in record time. But despite our best effort, we were too late to get Cleveland, and the flight left without us. The carrier?helped?us out by putting us in a hotel and feeding us. And Superman was?there to help us out?- so?overall, not?too shabby.

The next morning,?all of us are rebooked on the next flight out to Columbus. But with so many missed connections,?the plane was?oversold once again. My trip interruption was about to?extend - as I surrendered my standby seat to a soldier in uniform. But to be nice about extending my trip delay, the carrier gave me a travel credit - and offered to help me with a rental car.

So my trip delay has come to an end, right? Not quite: the rental car was twice as much as the amount of the voucher - so once again, my trip interruption grew. I went back to the airport, hoping to stow away somewhere for the 143-mile trip between Cleveland and Columbus. Luckily, I was able to?whimper my way onto the next flight out:?the never-ending?trip delay was over, and I was back to work by lunchtime dressed like something off a country?& western album cover -?just in time?to walk straight into a meeting with our regional CEO. ?

This trip interruption?consisted of two days, five flights, one hotel night, and about 600 miles. It was an excellent exercise on how to manage a trip delay - and a reminder of how lucky I am. If? the airline didn't help me, travel insurance would have made a big difference in my pocket.

So?here's what I did to make the trip delay more negotiable:

  1. Be nice to EVERYONE
Have you ever heard the saying about catching flies with honey? That absolutely applies in this situation. I don't care if someone?gave you a dirty look. Or prevented you from being on the next flight. Be nice to EVERYONE you meet. From the gate agents who?are getting mobbed, to?your fellow travelers: a laugh and shrug will get you a lot farther in a trip interruption than yelling. Just make sure all of your jokes are appropriate.
  2. Be flexible
Trip delays are an unfortunate and common part of air travel anymore
. And there are many factors that go into that: weather, airline consolidation, and ticket availability. With that, you can avoid a trip delay if you are flexible about your travel plans. Plan your trip with wiggle room (a day on one end or the other). This way,?if or when?you?experience ?a trip interruption, you can meet it easily and not have to worry about obligations at home.
  3. Join ALL the?travel programs
This is something I talk about often: if you're not a member of all the programs, join them. Because of my trip interruption, I got bonus airline miles, hotel points, and (almost) extra rental car credits. Do it right, and that equates to free trips in a hurry!

How do you manage a trip interruption? Please share with me your tips in the comments below - because frankly? I could really use them!? ? ? ? ?? ? ?

Government: Violent crimes rose 18 percent in 2011

(AP) ? The number of violent crimes rose by 18 percent in the United States last year while property crimes went up by 11 percent, the government reported Wednesday.

It was the first year-to-year increase for violent crime since 1993, marking the end of a long string of declines. Violent crime fell by 65 percent since 1993, from 16.8 million to 5.8 million last year.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics' annual national crime victimization survey, the size of the percentage increases in both violent crime and property crime for last year was driven in large part by the historically low levels seen in 2010.

The increase in violent crime was the result of an upward swing in assaults, which rose 22 percent, from 4 million in 2010 to 5 million last year. But the incidence of rape, sexual assault and robbery remained largely unchanged, as did serious violent crime involving weapons or injury

"While it's cause for concern, I would caution against forecasting future crime trends based on a one-year fluctuation," said Chris Melde, an assistant professor at Michigan State University's school of criminal justice.

"You can have percentage changes that seem quite large, but unless you put them in a longer-term perspective you can sometimes misinterpret the overall seriousness of the problem," Melde added.

The increases in violent crime experienced by whites, Hispanics, younger people and men accounted for the majority of the increase in violent crime.

In the latest survey, property crime was up for the first time in a decade, from 15.4 million in 2010 to 17 million last year. Household burglaries rose 14 percent, from 3.2 million to 3.6 million. The number of thefts jumped by 10 percent, from 11.6 million to 12.8 million.

The victimization figures are based on surveys by the Census Bureau of a large sample of people in order to gather data from those who are victims of crime. They are considered the government's most comprehensive crime statistics because they count both crimes that never are reported to the police as well as those reported.

Last May, the FBI's preliminary crime report for 2011, which counts only crimes reported to police, concluded that crime dropped again last year, down 4 percent for violent crime and 3.7 percent for property crime. The declines slowed in the second half of last year, a sign to academic experts that the many years of lowering crime levels might be nearing an end. Historically, less than half of all crimes, including violent crimes, are reported to police.
