Unrelenting Obama jabs at Romney's job record

GLEN ALLEN, Va. (AP) -- An unrelenting President Barack Obama jabbed at Mitt Romney's record with a private equity firm in an ad Saturday that aimed to keep his rival on the defensive just as the Republican challenger's campaign hoped to take advantage of poor economic data to gain an edge on the incumbent.

Obama met Romney's plea for an apology for the attacks with a mocking ad that charged that the firm shipped American jobs to China and Mexico, that Romney has personal wealth in investments in Switzerland, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, and that as Massachusetts governor, he sent state jobs to India.

"Mitt Romney's not the solution. He's the problem," the ads says as Romney is heard singing "America the Beautiful."

Pressure was building on Romney from within his own party to be more forthcoming with his finances, a day after he declared he would not release past income tax returns beyond his 2010 tax records and, before the November election, his 2011 taxes

On the sidelines of the National Governors Association meeting in Williamsburg, Alabama's Republican governor, Robert Bentley, called on Romney to release all the documents requested of him.

"If you have things to hide, then maybe you're doing things wrong," Bentley said. "I think you ought to be willing to release everything to the American people."

A soaked Obama, campaigning in a downpour in closely contested Virginia, hewed to his middle class-centered pitch in remarks in the district represented by one of his top Republican nemeses, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. He attacked Romney and his Republican allies for pursuing what the president branded as outdated and discredited economic policies.

Obama spoke to about 900 people in Glen Allen, arriving in a downpour. He eschewed a rain jacket or umbrella and apologized to the women for their ruined hairdos.

"We're gonna have to treat everybody to a salon visit after this" he quipped.

Later, as the rain continued without letup, he appealed for time to make one more point.

"Everybody's wet anyway" he said. "So it doesn't matter. It's too late. Those hairdos are all gone. "

Obama didn't dwell on Romney's business record, leaving the sharpest attacks to his campaign and the new television commercial. Still he played up the charge that Romney and the private equity firm he founded in 1984, Bain Capital, sent jobs overseas.

"He invested in companies that have been called pioneers of outsourcing," the president said, his shirt drenched and water streaming down his face. "I don't want pioneers in outsourcing, I want some insourcing. I want to bring companies back."

While Obama hammered Romney for a second consecutive day in Virginia, Romney spent time with his family in New Hampshire. The candidate, taking a weekend off from public events, spent the morning at his lake house, working on his iPad on the lawn while his grandchildren played nearby. His last public event was Wednesday and he didn't plan other public campaign appearances until Tuesday.

Romney aides began the week drumming Obama on stubbornly high unemployment but watched their upper hand fade. Romney's advisers said Saturday they would keep their plan and not be distracted by Obama's criticism. Romney aides declined to weigh in on Obama's latest criticism and pointed to Romney's television interviews on Friday.

The intensifying attacks and the calls for greater openness came amid stepped up attention to discrepancies between Securities and Exchange Commission filings and Romney's recollection of his role at Boston-based Bain Capital.

At stake is Romney's chief contention that as a former businessman, he has the experience to create jobs and spur a struggling economy. The Obama campaign has countered that Romney ran a firm that pioneered the practice of sending American jobs out of the country and that his background is one of an investor.

Romney insists that he stepped down from his private equity firm years earlier than federal records indicate

The new Obama ad was set to run in closely fought Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

In a round of interviews broadcast Friday evening, the Republican candidate said he wouldn't release more tax returns beyond the 2010 and 2011 returns.

"You can never satisfy the opposition research team of the Obama organization," Romney told CBS on Friday.

And he demanded an apology from Obama for the attacks. "This is simply beneath the dignity of the presidency of the United States," Romney told ABC.

Backhanding the request, the Obama campaign responded with a Web video that shows Romney criticizing Obama in speeches and interviews. Romney is seen accusing the president of not understanding freedom and following an appeasement strategy in foreign affairs, and saying he intends to "stuff it down his throat and point out that it is capitalism and freedom that makes this country strong."

On the flight from Washington to Richmond, Obama campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said that Romney "spends a lot of time asking for apologies, but he spends a lot of time attacking."

It wasn't just Obama, though, pressuring Romney.

"There is no whining in politics," chided John Weaver, a veteran Republican strategist. "Stop demanding an apology, release your tax returns."

Obama said the questions raised in numerous media reports and highlighted by his own campaign aides were a legitimate part of the race for the White House.

"Ultimately, I think, Mr. Romney is going to have to answer those questions because if he aspires to being president, one of the things you learn is you're ultimately responsible for the conduct of your operations," Obama said in an interview with the District of Columbia's WJLA-TV.

Romney called that "Chicago-style politics at its worst" and accused the president, who's from Chicago, and his campaign of trying to shift attention from the economy and unemployment situation.

In trying to put the matter behind him and return the campaign to his economic arguments, Romney declared he had "no role whatsoever in the management" of the company after he left to take over the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in early 1999.

Romney acknowledged that he would have benefited financially from Bain's operations even after he left management of the firm to others. That could open him up to criticism that he gained from investment in companies that sent jobs overseas.

"All of the investors participate in the success or failure of various investments, just like you do as a shareholder of an enterprise," Romney told CBS.

Bain Capital said in a statement that Romney "remained the sole stockholder for a time while formal ownership was being documented and transferred to the group of partners who took over management of the firm in 1999."

Death, grief in Syrian village, Annan urges action

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Graphic scenes of grief and death in a Syrian village bore witness on Friday to a massacre President Bashar al-Assad's opponents say was the work of his troops and militia allies, drawing words of outrage from the outside world.

But with much unclear about what happened at Tremseh - where opposition activists put the death toll at anywhere between over 100 and more than twice that number - and world powers divided as ever, there was little response beyond the rhetorical.

U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan condemned "atrocities", as unverifiable video evidence of casualties from Thursday's attack on the village in rebellious Hama province emerged on the Web.

The White House said such "atrocities" had cost Assad the legitimacy to remain as leader.

Annan was "shocked and appalled" at "intense fighting, significant casualties, and the confirmed use of heavy weaponry such as artillery, tanks and helicopters" in the village.

Calling it a "grim reminder" that U.N. resolutions calling for peace were being flouted, he wrote to the United Nations Security Council urging it to penalize Syria for failing to comply. But in the Council, Western powers still face objections from Russia and China to their efforts to push Assad from power.

BATTLE REPORTS

A local activist named Ahmed told Reuters there were 60 bodies at the mosque, of whom 20 were identified: "There are more bodies in the fields, bodies in the rivers and in houses."

There was no independent account of the battle, which the government described as a massacre by "terrorist groups".

Some opposition activists said over 220 people died when Tremseh was bombarded by helicopter gunships and tanks, then stormed by men from neighboring villages in what they portrayed as a sectarian attack on Sunnis by Assad's fellow Alawites.

Others said the death toll in Thursday's attack may have been less but was certainly over 100, which would make Tremseh one of the worst atrocities of the 17-month revolt against Assad and the 42-year-old family dynasty established by his father.

Syrian state television said there was fighting in Tremseh and accused "armed terrorist groups" of committing a massacre there, but gave no death toll. Opposition rebels also said there was a battle and the U.N. military representative confirmed it.

U.N. monitors in Syria tried to reach the scene on Friday but said in a report to their Geneva headquarters that they were prevented by an continuing operation by the Syrian air force in the area, targeting urban population centers.

Opposition video segments posted on YouTube, however, provided evidence that dozens had met a violent death.

One piece of film to appear on the Internet showed the corpses of 15 young men with faces or shirts drenched in blood. Most wore T-shirts and jeans. There were no women or children.

Other videos showed rows of bodies wrapped in blankets, sheets and makeshift shrouds, some leaking blood. One man pulled aside a blanket to display a carbonized corpse. Men placed wrapped bodies in a breeze-block trench for burial.

In a mosque packed with grieving women and distraught men, bodies were collected, identified and prepared. Children stepped gingerly among the corpses covering the floor.

ATROCITIES CONDEMNED

The White House said further "atrocities" by Assad's forces should remove doubt that a coordinated international response was necessary at the United Nations. A spokesman said that through "repeated acts of violence against the Syrian people" Assad had lost the legitimacy to lead.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "Everything we have seen of the Syrian regime's behavior over the last 17 months suggests that these reports are credible. They demand a united response from the international community."

UN monitors must get into Tremseh urgently to find out what happened, Hague said, and the United Nations Security Council must agree to a Chapter VII resolution with teeth that can impose sanctions if Assad fails to fulfill commitments made under the Annan plan, to withdraw his forces from residential areas.

Chapter VII allows the world body to take action ranging from sanctions to military intervention. But Russia and China have used veto powers so far to block such a resolution.

"Tragically, we now have another grim reminder that the Council's resolutions continue to be flouted," Annan wrote to the Council. Recalling his request for Syria to suffer consequences for non-compliance, he said: "This is imperative and could not be more urgent in light of unfolding events."

"ETHNIC CLEANSING"

Hama's revolutionary movement said what happened to Tremseh was a case of ethnic cleansing.

The Sunni Muslim village lies in flat farmland. Access had been cut off for six months by army roadblocks. Tremseh is ringed by six hilltop villages of the Alawite minority which has dominated Syria for four decades under the Assads. They provided the militia who carried out the lethal purge, the movement said.

In a report, it said 200 buses, army trucks, tanks and other armored vehicles besieged the town in the morning and five helicopters were counted when the bombardment began.

Rebels from nearby rushed to defend the village and the ensuing battle went on for seven hours. After the dust settled, at least 150 bodies were collected from under the rubble and from surrounding farmland and from the Orontes river.

Forty were summarily executed, 30 burnt beyond recognition, it said. Three families were hacked to death.

"We can verify continuous fighting yesterday in the area of Tremseh," said United Nations monitoring mission chief General Robert Mood. "This involved mechanized units, indirect fire, as well as helicopters."

U.N. monitors were ready to "go in and seek verification of facts if and when there is a credible ceasefire", he added.

Images of massacre may have a powerful effect on public opinion at a time when world powers are deadlocked over how to halt the bloodshed, with Moscow and Beijing, are opposed to Western and Arab calls for Assad to step down immediately.

SECURITY COUNCIL

The Tremseh battle took place as the U.N. Security Council began negotiating a potentially crucial new resolution on Syria. Washington said it showed the need to move to tougher action, but Russia again ruled out such a step. Further meetings were being held in New York on Friday.

In June, U.N. monitors took two days to reach the site of an alleged massacre of 78 people in the village of Mazraat al-Qubeir, a Sunni hamlet, by Alawite shabbiha militia.

Two weeks earlier the Syrian government had denied responsibility for the massacre of 108 men, women and children in the town of Houla on May 25, the vast majority of them executed according to a U.N. report. Damascus was widely condemned for the atrocity.

The insurgents cannot match the army's firepower but have seized footholds in villages, towns and even cities across Syria, where Assad's forces batter them with heavy weapons.

The shabbiha, armed Assad loyalists, have been accused repeatedly of cold-blooded indiscriminate killings carried out on the coat-tails of army offensives into rebel-held districts.

The anti-Assad Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimated that over 150 people had been killed on Thursday in Tremseh and across Hama province, most of them in the village massacre.

The Observatory listed 100 victims by name, among them dozens of rebel fighters. Over 30 of the dead were completely burned, it said, and some were killed with clubs and knives.

On Friday, activists said at least two Palestinian men were killed on Friday when Syrian security forces opened fire on an anti-Assad protests in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus.

Following high-profile defections in the past week of a family friend and a top diplomat, both Sunnis, analysts said cracks were appearing in Assad's ruling clique.

But his powerful ally Russia stuck by him on Thursday with a clear warning to the United States, Britain, France and Germany that it would not even consider a tough new U.N. resolution.

Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador Alexander Pankin said Moscow would use its veto if it had to. "We are definitely against Chapter VII," he said. "Anything can be negotiated, but we do not negotiate this, this is a red line."

Sandoval, Cabrera turn All-Star game into NL romp

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:07 p.m. ET July 10, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) -Pablo Sandoval and Melky Cabrera keyed a five-run blitz in the first inning that set up the National League's 8-0 win over the American League in Tuesday's All-Star game.

Cabrera homered and won the MVP award, and his San Francisco Giants teammate Matt Cain started a strong pitching performance for the NL in its most-lopsided All-Star victory.

Cain combined with Stephen Strasburg, R.A. Dickey, Aroldis Chapman and the rest of the bullpen on a six-hitter.

Ryan Braun, an All-Star again after his drug suspension was overturned last offseasonr, doubled, tripled and made a fine catch in the outfield to help give the NL its first three-game winning streak in two decades.

Chipper Jones singled in his final All-Star at-bat at age 40 as the NL, under retired manager Tony La Russa, once again claimed a victory that means its team will host Game 7 of the World Series if it goes that far.

Teen sensation Bryce Harper had a shaky All-Star debut. Fellow rookie Mike Trout, only 20, showed off his dynamic skills.

The game was effectively decided a few moments after it started.

Sandoval hit the first bases-loaded triple in All-Star history off Justin Verlander, who couldn't control his fastball. Cabrera singled and scored the first run, then hit a two-run homer against Matt Harrison in a three-run fourth.

"I don't get many triples," said the slow-footed Sandoval, known as Kung Fu Panda. "We had some fun with that in the dugout."

Cabrera was flanked by his mother as he received his award.

"I was surprised for me, the MVP, but thank you the fans," he said.

Rafael Furcal also hit a triple; the first time one side had three in a game.

As the All-Stars returned to Kansas City for the first time since 1973, La Russa bid a fond farewell to the national stage in the city where he played for his first major league team.

Having retired after managing St. Louis to last year's World Series title, La Russa became just the fourth inactive manager to skipper an All-Star team and improved to 4-2.

The NL boosted its advantage to 43-38-2 and won for just the third time in the 10 years the All-Star game has been used to determine home-field advantage in the World Series. La Russa's Cardinals benefited from last year's NL All-Star victory, with St. Louis winning Games 6 and 7 at home against Ron Washington's Texas Rangers.

Jones, retiring at the end of the season, also had one last All-Star moment, pinch hitting in the sixth and singling just past second baseman Ian Kinsler and into right field. Jones chuckled as the ball rolled through.

"Whether you're 19 or 40, we are all equals here," Jones said during his pregame speech to the NL.

Harper, at 19 the youngest position player in All-Star history, had a shaky start when he entered in the fifth. The heralded rookie lost Mike Napoli's routine fly to left in the lights, allowing it to drop behind him for a single. He then caught Kinsler's bases-loaded flyball to end the inning, earning cheers from the crowd of 40,933 at Kauffman Stadium, spruced up by a $250 million renovation that was completed three years ago.

Harper did draw a walk and tagged up on a long fly, but later got himself hung up in a rundown and tagged out.

Trout, among a record five All-Star rookies, had a nice showing against two very different pitchers. The Angels outfielder singled and stole a base against Dickey's knuckleball, then drew a walk against Chapman's fastball.

Cain pitched the 22nd perfect game in big league history last month. He didn't have to be perfect in this one, allowing one hit in two innings for the win.

"For those guys to go out and score five runs in the first inning was definitely a little more relaxing for me," he said. "But I still tried to stay focused."

Verlander had a puzzling outing. In games that count, he hasn't allowed five runs in an inning since April 2010, according to STATS LLC. He became the first to do so in an All-Star game since Roger Clemens in 2004.

"It was pretty difficult for me to get the ball down today," said Verlander, who admitted he approached this differently than a regular-season start.

"But I had fun," he said. "That's why I don't try to throw 100 in the first inning. But this is for the fans. It doesn't usually work out too well for me."

Cabrera singled with one out in the first and scored on a double to deep right by Braun, the reigning NL MVP.

Verlander threw six straight balls during consecutive two-out walks. Sandoval sent a drive off the base of the wall in the right-field corner for a 4-0 lead.

He scored when Dan Uggla grounded to the shortstop hole and first baseman Prince Fielder failed to grasp the one-hop throw, leaving Uggla with an infield hit.

After Furcal tripled to right, Matt Holliday singled for a 6-0 lead and Cabrera followed with a homer.

Dickey pitched a one-hit sixth. Although he has a big league-best 12-1 record, the 37-year-old Dickey was denied the start - possibly because of the difficulty of catching his knuckleball. He brought along an oversized glove from Mets catcher Josh Thole that was used by Carlos Ruiz.

"I really appreciate the warm reception by the fans in Kansas City. Maybe a lot of them have heard my story," Dickey said.

"It was definitely worth the wait," he said.
