Quest for Higgs boson enters new phase

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) ? In The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the humorous answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything turned out to be an ambiguous "42."

This summer, University of Chicago particle physicists and their colleagues at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva announced the discovery of what may be the closest thing to a scientific counterpart of The Hitchhiker's Guide's whimsical figure. Their experiments revealed a new particle with a mass somewhere between 125 and 126 giga-electron volts, or 134 times the mass of the proton. This figure falls within the predicted range for the Higgs boson, which acquired a decidedly unscientific nickname -- "The God Particle" -- after the title of a book co-written by Nobel laureate Leon Lederman, the Frank E. Sulzberger Professor Emeritus in Physics.

Physicists at UChicago and elsewhere have chased the elusive Higgs boson for more than two decades. The University produced many of the leaders in theory and experimentation whose ideas and instruments have shaped the long quest for the crucial particle, at the LHC and at Fermilab near Chicago. Without the Higgs, theorists believe, the universe would contain no atoms, no elements, no stars, and no people.

The Higgs particle is named for Scottish physicist Peter Higgs, who sought to explain why some particles have mass and others don't. Bagging the Higgs boson was the first big prize on the LHC research agenda. If the Higgs boson is indeed what LHC physicists have found, the discovery has, like "42," its own ambiguous aspects.

"This is the beginning. We still don't know what this thing is," says Henry Frisch, professor in physics and a longtime member of the Collider Detector at Fermilab collaboration.

Finding a "missing piece" of modern theory

The new particle could be, as expected, the last missing piece of the Standard Model of particle physics, which describes the fundamental structure and behavior of ordinary matter. Or the particle could be something more exotic, such as a supersymmetric Higgs, offering insights into the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy, which together are thought to comprise 96 percent of the universe.

LHC physicists have searched for supersymmetry via multiple avenues, says James Pilcher, professor in physics. "So far all of these searches are coming up empty," Pilcher says. "Maybe we haven't been looking in the correct way so far. Maybe supersymmetry is hiding in some obscure corner that we haven't been able to explore yet."

Pilcher is one of six UChicago faculty members who belong to the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) collaboration at the LHC. Another is Melvyn Shochet, the Elaine M. and Samuel D. Kersten Jr. Distinguished Service Professor in Physics. Shochet agrees with Pilcher that discovering supersymmetric particles may take more time.

"String theory requires that there be supersymmetric partners of the particles that we know, but it doesn't require that they be in the mass range that has been studied so far," Shochet says. "It's very early in the game, and there's an awful lot to do."

Another LHC leader with UChicago roots is alumnus Joseph Incandela, BS'81, MS'85, PhD'96, a professor of physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and scientific spokesman for the European facility's other massive Higgs collaboration, called CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid).

UChicago ATLAS collaborator Frank Merritt, professor in physics, notes that over the last several decades, much of the progress made in particle physics has involved confirming details of the Standard Model, but a new era may be beginning.

"We're getting to a point now where we're certainly going to go beyond the Standard Model," Merritt says. "We don't know what we're going to see. It might be supersymmetry, it might be something else, but it's going to be a very exciting exploration."

Particles on the grid

A key element of this exploration will be the grid computing methods developed at UChicago and Argonne National Laboratory, which already have played a critical role in the Higgs search.

The fictional Deep Thought computer in Hitchhiker's Guide crunched numbers for millions of years before arriving at the cryptic answer "42." It took scientists far less time to pinpoint the mass of their newly discovered particle from data collected since 2011, thanks to the grid computing methods used for analyzing their latest results.

Computation Institute director Ian Foster helped invent grid computing, which allows people to share computer power, databases, and other online tools autonomously and securely across organizational and geographic boundaries.

"Building directly on concepts, methods, and software developed at Argonne and UChicago -- and, certainly, elsewhere -- the LHC Computing Grid distributes petabytes of data worldwide to hundreds of sites for reconstruction and analysis," observes Foster, the Arthur Holly Compton Distinguished Service Professor in Computer Science. "Without the LHC Computing Grid, the discovery could not have occurred."

Product Creation Advice ? My Top 3 Ways to Effectively Use Twitter ...

?

By Maritza Parra

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that had been growing at lightning speed with about 5.5 million users at the time of this article. I had no idea what to do once I signed up for my free twitter account. Now I?ve learned what to do and I?m filling up my Teleseminars and my how-to-make-information-products classes with people who came directly from twitter.

Twitter Tip 1: Follow More than just your friends and family.

At first, I was only following one person and couldn?t figure out why in the world anyone would care about random messages about what I was doing and I was sick of hearing all about what he was doing 24/7. I almost (gasp) stopped using twitter altogether because I did not understand it.

Now I follow everyone except those people who look like they might be spammers. By having a lot of followers, every time you send out a message or an invitation to a teleseminar or a new product, those people who are interested in your subject will sign up. More sign ups to your teleseminars means you are building your list community and more customers who can sign up for your products and classes.

Twitter Tip 2: Go to Your Twitter People (Tweeple) when You Need a Boost.

Sometimes you might have a bad day. It?s hard to create products or do much else effectively when you are feeling negative. We all have days like this. I?ve noticed that most people on twitter are extremely positive and caring. If I ever feel discouraged, all I have to do is go to twitter and read some of the posts or interact with my tweeple and I can continue my day with an infusion of inspiration.

Twitter Tip 3: Survey Your Tweeple to See What Kind of Products They Would Buy.

One day I wanted to do a little market research and I decided I would send a survey to my regular list community and the same survey to my twitter followers. I was amazed at the higher responsiveness from my twitter followers compared to my regular list community.

I believe it?s because on twitter people are actively engaged and everyone is flooded with email and many times email is simply ignored. I know I don?t read most of my email or I would never get anything done. I got a huge response from my twitter and they helped me decided which product to create next. I filled up that class with a lot of people from twitter!

Apple?s US$1 billion Legal Victory Send Warning to All Chinese Phone Makers
front

THE Apple vs Samsung lawsuit, probably is the most high-profile case in the consumer electronics industry, wound up with a jury ordering Samsung to pay Apple US$1.05 billion, the biggest sum so far awarded in an intellectual property case. The global smartphone industry will be influenced for a long time to come by the verdict, especially Chinese smartphone makers who lack patents and innovation. It?s a clear warning signal for all Chinese phone makers. Patents are an ?empty space? for most domestic phone makers in China, and that poses a huge potential risk ?

Google?s Android OS now has 70 percent of the smartphone market. Most brands, except Apple and Nokia, are highly dependent on the mobile operating system, and they probably will have to adapt the functions after the Apple-Samsung verdict. That will push the research cost of an Android smartphone higher, placing more pressure on Chinese smartphone makers, who are relatively small players compared with the likes of Samsung. For software, Chinese phone makers rely heavily on Android. It?s ?dangerous? now because the Chinese player are facing lawsuit risks on patents as they expand in the future.

Apple?s legal victory poses lawsuit risks on Chinese phone makers.

Besides the Android system, the jury also determined that Samsung ?purposely? copied the design of the iPhone, the product of years of research by Apple. Compared with overseas Android models from Motorola, HTC and Sony Mobile, a handset industry observer said China-brand designs are ?nothing worth mentioning?. Sony Mobile is good at fashion designs catering to young consumer, while Motorola has slim designs that fascinate enterprise user. There is nothing memorable about China brands, except for their low prices at about 1,000 yuan (US$158).

China is the world?s biggest phone market, and most Apple and Samsung phones are made here. No doubt, patent lawsuits will come sooner or later to China. The big boys are not suing the Chinese firms now because they are not so internationally competitive. If Chinese firms don?t have enough patents and reserved technologies, they will lose the legal challenges. ZTE and Huawei have penetrated overseas markets, mainly in the low end of the mobile phone market. When they try to compete in the high end globally, they need to pay more attention to patent risks. Chinese brands must start now to increase their investment in research of industrial designs, functionality and user experience before it is too late.

China is the world?s largest and fastest-growing mobile phone market.

Angeles National Forest Wildfire: Labor Day Visitors Turned Away From Big Blaze

GLENDORA, Calif. ? A wildfire northeast of Los Angeles spoiled the Labor Day of thousands of visitors to the Angeles National Forest as firefighters bore down for what figured to be a long fight against the big blaze.

Picnickers hoping to spend the day in the forest Monday ran into firefighters' road blocks instead as a large swath of the forest was closed to visitors, though the fire was moving away from inhabited areas.

Victor Saldana Jr. had a cooler full of food and drinks in the back of his pickup and was headed toward the mountains before he was forced to turn around.

"I requested the day off from work, we were looking for a nice time out today," Saldana told NBC4. "It's good that the government's taking precautions, but at the same time it kind of ruins a lot of people's plans."

A day after the wildfire broke out near a campground and forced the evacuation of thousands of recreation-seekers and a few dozen residents it had grown to more than 4,100 acres, or roughly 6 square miles, and was just five percent contained.

Officials set up an incident management team early Monday morning to map out a long-term strategy to battle the blaze, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Angie Lavell said.

Only light winds were blowing in the area, and the flames continue to burn deeper into a wilderness area away from any structures.

The forest is heavily used by Southern California residents because it is a short drive from very populated areas.

Campgrounds that typically attract up to 12,000 visitors on the holiday weekend, as well as rehabilitation centers and the private mobile home community of Camp Williams Resort, were evacuated on Sunday.

About 30 of the 75 residents of the mobile home park chose to remain with their homes.

Daniel Burress, a 68-year-old who is known to park residents as "grandpa," said he has never evacuated, even when wildfires were far closer.

"I'm a Vietnam vet," Burress told the Los Angeles Times. "So this doesn't scare me at all."

The Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at Glendora High School.

Officials said campgrounds, while not in the line of the fire, had to be emptied so that the only road in and out of the San Gabriel Canyon could be open just for fire trucks and emergency vehicles.

About 300 firefighters were aided by six water-dropping helicopters, an air tanker and 25 engines. Fire officials activated the use of a DC-10 capable of dropping thousands of gallons of retardant.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Another wildfire broke out Sunday in Ventura County in the Los Padres National Forest. Forest Service firefighters stopped its growth after it burned about 30 acres.

In Northern California, firefighters spent Monday focusing on the rugged and remote northern edge of a weeks-old fire in Mendocino County. Full containment is expected by Sept. 10.

More than 1,600 firefighters continue to battle the blaze, which has scorched more than 65 square miles and remained at 58 percent contained.

Russia says will retaliate if Britain has blacklisted officials

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Monday it would retaliate if Britain confirmed a media report that it could ban dozens of Russian officials from entering the country for their alleged roles in the 2009 prison death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said it had asked Britain whether it had blacklisted 60 people including judges, intelligence officers and prosecutors, as a newspaper reported. The ministry did not say what a Russian diplomatic response could entail.

Magnitsky, a 37-year-old lawyer for an equity fund, died about a year after he was jailed on charges of tax evasion and fraud.

Former colleagues say the charges were fabricated by police investigators he had accused of stealing $230 million from the Russian state through fraudulent tax returns.

The Kremlin's own human rights council has said Magnitsky was probably beaten to death.

Britain's Sunday Times reported that Home Secretary Theresa May had sent a list of 60 Russians to the British embassy in Moscow and that they could be banned from entering Britain.

"We have ... asked the official British authorities for confirmation or denial of this information," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.

"We will determine our reaction depending on the answer," he said. "Obviously, if London has introduced some sanctions against Russian citizens, the Russian side will react, as is accepted in diplomatic practice."

A diplomatic dispute over the Magnitsky case would further strain relations between Britain and Russia. The countries have been at odds over security, diplomatic and human rights issues for years, particularly since the 2006 murder in London of Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian spy who died from poisoning with radioactive polonium-210.

In December 2010, Britain expelled a diplomat from the Russian embassy in London. It said this was in response to "clear evidence" of activities by the Russian intelligence services against British interests.

Russia responded days later by expelling a diplomat from the British embassy in Moscow.

The Magnitsky case has also strained ties between Russia and the United States. A U.S. Senate panel in June approved a bill, sharply criticised by Moscow, that would require the United States to deny visas and freeze the assets of Russians linked to Magnitsky's death, along with other human rights abusers in Russia or anywhere in the world.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Magnitsky's death a tragedy, but said Moscow would retaliate against the bill.

The British embassy could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday. Britain's policy is not to comment on individual cases involving visa applications or denials.

Russian news agency Interfax quoted a British embassy representative as saying visa applicants are usually denied entry if they are found to have violated human rights.
