Personal Injury Claims: Don't Settle Without First Knowing Your Rights

The majority of Americans spend thousands of dollars each year on insurance. But because most of us never suffer the large losses, we may have very little experience in dealing with insurance companies. Many people don?t realize that insurance companies only have one goal, to avoid paying on claims, even to their own insured. And when they have to pay up, they will do everything they can to get you to sign the release and discharge your rights before you even know what they are.

In order to avoid these cheap tactics and games the insurance companies like to play, you need to hire an experienced Orange County accident attorney to deal with the insurance company and get you the just compensation that you deserve.

Generally speaking, whether an accident victim will recover the full compensation they are entitled to largely depends on the individual?s own knowledge of his or her rights. And since most victims are either unaware of the full extent of their rights or may be too busy dealing with their injuries, the insurance adjusters will take advantage of the situation by tricking the claimant into signing a release that places the claimant at a major disadvantage.

In short, insurance companies and adjusters are not sympathetic to the rights of injured claimants. This is precisely why you need to have an experienced Orange County accident attorney on your side that will have your best interests in mind and advise you of all of your rights before you enter into any settlement agreements.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident, you may be entitled to compensation. At the Law Offices of Samer Habbas, our legal team is dedicated to getting you the maximum compensation you and your family deserve for the injuries you have suffered.

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

Greasy fingers are the bane of touchscreens, obscuring the display behind snail trails of oil and streaks of grime. Forget that mess. Leap Motion has promised hands-free PC navigation for months now, and after some hands-on time we can confirm that the future is here, and it's amazing.

As a brief refresher, the Leap Motion Controller tracks your hand and finger movements in three-dimensional space, allowing users to recreate multitouch input without actually touching anything. You just wave your hands and wiggle your fingers in the air over it and boom, your computer responds.

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

It will be available for Windows 7 and 8, as well as Mac OS X 10.6 and above, when the $80 device hits store shelves on July 29th (though if you pre-ordered, it's out on the 22nd). It won't be available for mobile to start but the company is looking into potentially integrating the technology with a number of OEMs.

With a few waves of your hands, both native applications?from web browsers to Google Earth?and system navigations respond instantly to your commands. The company is also developing Airspace, an online hub for LeapMotion-enabled applications.

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

"Everything you can do with a touch-based system, like Windows 8, can now be accomplished with LeapMotion technology. We want our users to have a magical experience, with easy and natural movements in the air leading to amazing interactions. This is the foundation for our approach to existing systems," David Holz, co-founder and CTO of LeapMotion, said in a press statement. "But this is only the beginning. The potential for our 3D interaction technology is really unleashed by applications built specifically for LeapMotion, helping drive the future of computing."

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic

I had the opportunity to try out the Leap Motion last week, and great googly moogly this thing is amazeballs. It tracks both hands?their position, angle, rotation, orientation, everything?in real time, as well as the positions and movements of all three joints in all ten fingers. The controller registers everything within a roughly foot-tall, 18-inch-wide dome-shaped area surrounding the controller and is wildly accurate, picking up even miniscule finger twitches. During the demo, used Google Earth to fly around Lower Manhattan like I was the kid from Flight of the Navigator, I played a 3D variation of Brick Breaker using my index fingers as paddles to punch, poke, and prod the ball around the arena, and I navigated around both OS X and Windows 8 systems by swiping my hands through the air.

It was strange, initially, getting used to moving the cursor without grabbing a mouse or tapping the screen but it only takes a second to get the hang of the process. The controller can also be set to use either basic controls (taps, swipes, and other common input commands) or more advanced gestures, which helps ease you into it as well.

Granted, I played with this device for all of 15 minutes in a controlled environment (LeapMotion's SF office) but that was a glorious quarter hour; I felt like Tony Stark using the Jarvis UI. July 29th can't come soon enough.

Acer Aspire P3 review: a nice enough tablet, but wait for the refresh

Back when Windows 8 first launched, the Acer Iconia W700 quickly became one of our favorite laptop / tablet hybrids. There were two reasons for that, really: the price was right, and the battery lasted longer than pretty much any other Win 8 device we'd tested. The thing is, it was more of a business device than something we'd recommend to the average consumer. After all, it came with a heavy, desk-bound docking station, with the carrying case and included keyboard as standalone pieces. That's quite a lot to carry if you ever feel like taking it on the road.

That's where the Acer Aspire P3 comes in. Don't worry, the W700 is still alive and kicking, but for people who've been looking for something more portable, this could be the one you want. Like the W700, the P3 starts at a reasonable price ($800) and has the guts of an Ivy Bridge laptop, including a Core i5 processor, Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4GB of RAM and a 120GB SSD. The difference is that rather than a clunky cradle, it comes with a carrying case that doubles as a keyboard; just prop the tablet up into a ready-made slot when you feel like watching movies or answering email. Yep, kind of like the Surface Pro, except there's no built-in kickstand and the keyboard is actually included. So is it a good deal at that price? Let's find out.

BuzzFeed Says New ?Flight Mode' Campaign Shows ?The Consumerization Of B2B Marketing'

buzzfeed flight modeBuzzFeed always seems to be the first online publication that comes up when people want to talk about smart, creative approaches to "native" advertising, so here's a cool example of what the site is doing with advertisers ? it's partnering with GE to allow readers to navigate the site in "Flight Mode." The campaign was designed to promote GE Aviation's presence at the Paris Air Show, a weeklong industry event that ends today. In Flight Mode, BuzzFeed becomes a grid of articles, and readers fly over that grid in a little plane. When they alight on a headline that interests them, they just hit the space bar and they can read the article in the normal view.

"Except for some bumps and bruises I am thankful there were no serious injuries," Michaels told Celebuzz. "It is unfortunate for the deer, but thankfully due to modern RV technology and a steel firewall we are all OK. I have every intention to make tonight's show in Biloxi and the tour will continue."

The former Poison frontman only sustained minor cuts and bruises, according to the site.

This is just the latest in a series of scares for Michaels.

Swiss tax windfall boosts UK public finances in May

By David Milliken and William Schomberg

LONDON (Reuters) - A windfall payment of tax by Swiss banks caused Britain's public finances to post a smaller-than-expected deficit in May, and underlying figures suggested the government was on track to meet its budget target this year.

Deficit reduction is the central economic policy of Britain's Conservative-led coalition, which came to power in May 2010. At that point Britain's budget deficit was more than 11 percent of annual economic output - one of the highest rates for a major economy.

But public borrowing has remained stubbornly high over the past year, and data showed total public net debt climbed to record levels in May.

The budget deficit stood at 7.8 percent of gross domestic product on an underlying basis in the tax year that ended in March, down only a fraction from the previous year due to sluggish economic growth.

Friday's data from the Office for National Statistics showed that two months into the new tax year, the government is on track to meet this year's similarly modest deficit-cutting goal.

The government's preferred measure of Britain's public borrowing, which strips out some of the effects of its bank bailouts, showed a deficit of 8.8 billion pounds in May, almost half the shortfall in May 2012 and well below analyst forecasts of a deficit of 12.6 billion pounds in a Reuters poll.

Some of the fall had been expected because of a scheduled 3.9 billion-pound cash transfer from the Bank under a controversial deal last year to return interest payments on the BoE's massively increased gilt holdings to the government.

But most economists had not expected an upcoming payment of 3.2 billion pounds from a Swiss tax deal to be booked so soon.

Swiss banks agreed last year to settle the tax affairs of British citizens with undeclared bank accounts in the Alpine country, but the exact timing of the payments was not clear.

Analysts were confident the government would meet its 2013/14 goal of borrowing no more than 120 billion pounds, excluding the boost from Bank cash transfers.

"Overall the early signs for the new fiscal year are that the government can afford to be optimistic about meeting the full-year target for core borrowing excluding the QE cash flows," said Sam Hill, a fixed income strategist at RBC.

PAST BORROWING DOWN

There was also good news for the government as the ONS revised down its previous estimates for borrowing in the last three tax years by more than 4 billion pounds although government debt is still far higher than forecast in 2010.

Britain's total net public debt, even excluding the direct costs of bailing out the country's banks, now stands at 1.189 trillion pounds - equivalent to 75.2 percent of GDP.

When Chancellor George Osborne gave his first budget after his Conservative-led coalition came to power in May 2010, he aimed to have reduced the deficit to 5.5 percent of GDP by now and for debt to peak at just over 70 percent of GDP this year before falling.

While the opposition Labour party blames this failure on an excessively rapid initial pace of deficit reduction that it says stopped the economy from growing, the finance ministry says it is largely due to the crisis in the euro area, Britain's main export market.

Next week Osborne is due to set out plans for public spending restraint until April 2016 - a year after the 2015 national election. While he set out the total amount of spending in his March budget, individual government departments have yet to find out how much they will receive.

'Sopranos' star James Gandolfini challenged mobster stereotype

The actor who played Tony Soprano was remembered for his talent and his respect for others by HBO, the channel which aired the hit series 'The Sopranos,' in a statement released Wednesday. Gandolfini had a varied career from Broadway to television and film.

In a statement, the cable channel, and Gandolfini's managers Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders, said he died Wednesday while on holiday in Rome. No cause of death was given.

'Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving,' said Armstrong and Sanders.

HBO called the actor a 'special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone, no matter their title or position, with equal respect.' The channel expressed sympathy for his wife and children.

Gandolfini played mob boss Tony Soprano in the groundbreaking HBO series that aired from 1999 to 2007. His film credits included 'Zero Dark Thirty' and 'Killing Them Softly,' and he amassed stage credits as well.

He shared a Broadway stage in 2009 with Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden in a celebrated production of 'God of Carnage,' where he earned a Tony Award nomination for best actor. He had also been in 'On the Waterfront' with David Morse and was an understudy in a revival of 'A Streetcar Named Desire' in 1992 starring Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange.

Gandolfini's performance in 'The Sopranos' was indelible and career-making, but he refused to be stereotyped as the bulky mobster who was a therapy patient, family man and cold-blooded killer.

After the David Chase series concluded with its breathtaking blackout ending, Gandolfini's varied film work included comedies such as 'In the Loop,' a political satire, and the heartwarming drama 'Welcome to the Rileys,' which costarred Kristen Stewart. He voiced the Wild Thing Carol in 'Where the Wild Things Are.'

In a December 2012 interview with The Associated Press, Gandolfini said he gravitated to acting as a release, a way to get rid of anger. 'I don't know what exactly I was angry about,' he said.

'I try to avoid certain things and certain kinds of violence at this point,' he said last year. 'I'm getting older, too. I don't want to be beating people up as much. I don't want to be beating women up and those kinds of things that much anymore.'

Movie review: World War Z is dead good, but Brad Pitt's messiah act ...

Zombies pose a unique threat in the horror genre: they break all the rules. Zombies don?t come out only at night, they don?t change on a full moon night, and they don?t lurk in the depths of the oceans. Unlike vampires or werewolves or sharks, zombies aren?t hunters.

They?re an epidemic. Their terror lies in how quickly they spread. A single zombie isn?t that scary, but millions of them ? mindless hordes clambering over each other with the single aim of eating living human brains ? yours, specifically ? are a contagion that will spread, infect and consume. As a threat, the genre has more in common with Contagion, or even Hitchcock?s The Birds. With no method to their madness, they defy the Hollywood movie hero whose logic and tools can defeat any apocalyptic threat.

Except, you know, Brad Pitt.

Brad Pitt is humanity's saviour in this zombie flick. AP image

Brad Pitt is humanity?s saviour in this zombie flick. AP image

World War Z, the adaptation of the book of the same name by Max Brooks, both fails and succeeds at its attempt to bring to screen the knotted geo-political strands that made up the book. Directed by Mark Forster, the movie begins with Pitt?s character, ex-United Nations employee Gerry Lane, facing a traffic gridlock in the streets of Philadelphia with his wife and kids in tow.

But this is no normal traffic jam. This one is caused by thousands of zombies crashing down upon the streets like a tsunami wave. Pitt grabs his family and turns from regular guy to a human Swiss knife which can transform itself into the right weapon for any crisis. He chops, shoots and sprints himself and his family into a waiting government chopper.

What follows is Hollywood?s basic messiah set-up. Lane is pulled out of retirement when his family and he reach one of the ?safe zones?. He?s the only one with the kind of experience in similarly volatile situations ? Chechnya, Sri Lanka and Kosovo are his old stomping grounds ? to figure out where the ?zeeks? (the military term) came from, since their numbers are too large for killing them to be a strategy. Otherwise, he?s told, his family will be kicked out of the safe zone. The family man has no choice but to comply.

Lane then travels with a group of experts (which include a Harvard-educated 23-year-old who is hailed as ?our last chance?; except he accidentally shoots himself in the head before he even gets off the plane) to South Korea, where the outbreak apparently originated. There, he?s directed to Jerusalem by a CIA double-agent. Israel has gone into complete lockdown, having erected towering walls around their country. Scenes that show zombies clambering over each other in order to scale a towering wall are where the movie nails the unstoppable nature of the beast.

It?s also here that Lane, with his rugged good looks and on-the-ground intuition, notices a detail that was apparently missed by the world?s best scientific minds. This detail spins off into the climax, which smartly dials down the mayhem into the sterile surroundings of a World Health Organisation building in the UK. Silence, medicines, confined spaces ? if the rest of the movie didn?t hit your terror sweet spot, the end definitely will. The movie is genuinely scary without a lazy reliance on gore.

However, there are a few problems. Hollywood logic consistently saves us from genuine terror. Every time a movie brings you to the cusp of fear, we are saved by the thought ? ?He can?t die/be horrible/kill his mother, he?s the lead character!? Applying this rationale would be fine in any other summer blockbuster starring Will Smith. But World War Z is based on a book that abandoned the narrative device of happy endings. The book?s only deviation from harrowing realism is that it has zombies in it. Brooks has himself said that literally everything in the book ? ?technology, politics, economics, culture, military tactics,? ? is based on thorough research. Reference books, experts and the US Army were used as resources for the author to make the breakdown of society and its repercussions seem as realistic as possible.

There are no lone messiahs allowed in such a messy world, even if they?ve aged as well as Pitt has. The book is merely an oral history of the carnage; there are no saviours because it is fundamentally too late for one. By bringing Lane in as the can-do saviour, Matthew Michael Carnahan, who adapted the screenplay, stumbled on the jump from good to ground-breaking. Lane is literally the only main character; others, such as a female Israeli soldier played by Daniella Kertesz and the wife played by Mireille Enos, only enjoy snatches of screen time.

The special effects are best enjoyed in wide shots, when the spectacle of swarms of zombies will distract you from the faces which can be best described as ?slobbery?. The movie is scrubbed clean of ambiguity as well. The book featured all the immoral humanity that manifests itself during crisis ? people marketed fake vaccines, irrational nuclear war broke out and denial took a long time to be rooted out. Here, zombies are bad, and humans are the best.

?The only thing similar is the title,? Brooks said pragmatically in an interview. And that?s true. The movie apparently went through ?production hell?, with its budget ballooning and the ending being hastily rewritten and refilmed. Fans of the book will find almost none of the criticisms of government ineptitude and human near-sightedness that characterised the novel. Also missing is a reference to the zombie outbreak starting in China, apparently an attempt to appease the country?s important box office market. All these factors slow down an otherwise competent movie, and while World War Z isn?t as bad as it could be, it?s definitely not as good as it could have been either.

Egypt Muslim-Christian clashes leave 1 dead

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian security officials say clashes between Muslims and Christians in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria left one man dead of a heart attack.

Officials say the clashes in the city's el-Dekheila suburb erupted when a Coptic man allegedly sexually harassed a Muslim woman.

Residents of the area fired birdshot and threw Molotov cocktails at one another during the Friday night fighting.

Police say Christian resident Sherif Sedky died of a heart attack during the clashes. Police forces were beefed up around the local church Saturday in case of further violence.

Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's population. Sectarian violence has been on the rise in Egypt over the past two years.

Houston Museum to Top Historic NASA Jet with Mock Space Shuttle

HOUSTON ? They say that everything is bigger in Texas and that certainly goes for Space Center Houston's newly-announced space shuttle exhibit.

Space Center Houston, which serves as the official visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center, revealed plans on Thursday (May 2) to display its full-size space shuttle mockup atop the historic jumbo jetliner that ferried the real orbiters after their return from space and delivered them to their museum homes.

NASA transferred ownership of its original Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), a modified Boeing 747 jet, to Space Center Houston on Thursday, setting in motion the visitor center's plans to pair the replica shuttle it received last June with the airplane that landed in Houston five months later. [How NASA Flew Space Shuttles on 747 Jets (Photos)]

"This is an exciting day for Texans, as we accept the SCA from NASA and assume the awesome responsibility for its modifications, showcasing its legacy and adding a one-of-a-kind experience to our complex," said Richard Allen, president and CEO of Space Center Houston. "We look forward to accepting the challenge of raising funds for this amazing endeavor as we prepare for the next phase of this major expansion."

The new $12 million outdoor complex, named "The Shuttle and 747 Carrier," is to open to the public in February 2015.

"The Shuttle and 747 Carrier will give visitors the world's first and only all-access pass to an authentic and realistic journey through the inside of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft as well as an unforgettable experience aboard the full-scale shuttle model," Space Center Houston stated in a release. "The up close and personal access to American aviation history will reveal the shuttle program's amazing ingenuity, clever innovation and awe-inspiring complexity."

An artist's rendering of the planned exhibit shows the 747 jumbo jet, known by its tail number "NASA 905," parked outside Space Center Houston where the space shuttle mockup sits today. A gantry-like structure sits next to the air- and spacecraft combo that will provide visitors the opportunity to climb inside both vehicles.

The carrier aircraft is currently at Ellington Field, home to Johnson Space Center's aircraft operations, located about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Space Center Houston. To get the aircraft to the visitor center, its wings and tail will be removed, and its fuselage will be sectioned in three.

The jumbo jet is expected to be in place at Space Center Houston by this November. The work to hoist the 130,000-pound (60,000-kilogram) shuttle mockup atop the airplane will follow during the first quarter of 2014.

Before the model orbiter leaves the ground however, it will need to undergo some repairs and modifications, including the installation of attachment hardware to mount it on the back of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. Space Center Houston also plans to upgrade the interior of the mockup, including replacing its early-shuttle analog flight deck displays and controls with the "glass cockpit" digital version that was in use later in the program.

The shuttle mockup arrived in Houston by barge from the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, where it debuted in 1993. Known then by the name "Explorer," it was designed and built by aerospace replica manufacturer Guard-Lee, Inc. using schematics, blueprints, and archival documents provided by NASA and the shuttle contractors.

NASA 905 was one of two Shuttle Carrier Aircraft in the space agency's fleet. The?final ferry flight for the shuttle program?delivered the retired Endeavour orbiter to Los Angeles for the California Science Center last year. The jumbo jet's final overall flight was in December, when it was flown for an hour-and-a-half proficiency flight from Ellington.

In service to the shuttle program for 35 years, NASA 905 flew 70 out of the 87 ferry flights during the space shuttle program's operational phase, including 46 of the 54 post-mission flights from the Dryden Flight Research Center in California to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Converted from an American Airlines passenger jet, 905 was NASA's first SCA and it flew the 1977 approach and landing tests with the prototype orbiter Enterprise.

Space Center Houston plans The Shuttle and 747 Carrier exhibit to be more than a public attraction, but also serve as the centerpiece for new educational programs to inspire students to consider careers in math and science fields.

Venezuela's parliament launches probe into Capriles

By Deisy Buitrago

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's government-controlled parliament on Wednesday set up an inquiry into violence over its disputed election that authorities blame on opposition leader Henrique Capriles.

Nine people died and dozens were injured after opposition protests against Nicolas Maduro's narrow April 14 presidential poll win turned violent around the South American nation.

The government asserted that the unrest was evidence the opposition was planning a coup. Capriles' camp has rejected that, saying officials have exaggerated the violence and have tried to use deaths from common crimes to bolster the toll discredit the opposition.

"The government is desperately sowing lies," said Capriles, who called supporters onto the streets after the disputed election results, but has since urged only peaceful protests.

The National Assembly said on Twitter that a special committee would begin meeting on Monday to investigate the violence. "The commission will determine responsibility for violent actions directed by Capriles," it said.

Government legislator Pedro Carreno, who will head the committee that does not include any opposition parliamentarians, called Capriles a "murderer" during Wednesday's announcement.

"Sooner rather than later, he will have to pay for those crimes," Carreno said, describing the death of an 11-year-old girl as the result of "fascism."

Inside Venezuela, reports of the violence have varied, with state media painting an image of pro-opposition mobs burning government offices and health facilities. The opposition media quoted family members of victims saying that some of the deaths had nothing to do with the political tensions.

In a sustained assault against Capriles from numerous senior officials, National Assembly head Diosdado Cabello called him a "fascist murderer," while Prisons Minister Iris Varela said a jail cell and rehabilitation therapies awaited him.

Capriles, a 40-year-old state governor who promises Brazilian-style pro-business policies mixed with strong social protections, confounded opinion polls to run a close finish against Maduro in the election to succeed late socialist leader Hugo Chavez.

Despite an initial large gap in the polls, emotion around the death of Chavez who had endorsed him as successor as well as a powerful state apparatus behind his election campaign, Maduro won by less than 2 percentage points.

Capriles said the ballot was marred by thousands of irregularities, including intimidation of voters at poll centers, and demanded a recount.

The election board is carrying out a partial audit but has said that will not change the result.

Both Maduro and Capriles have called on supporters to march again on May 1 in another potential flashpoint for the OPEC nation of 29 million people.

"The government spokesmen don't understand that threatening Capriles, the leader of half the country, means threatening the trust of more than 7.5 million Venezuelans," said opposition leader Antonio Ledezma.

"They'll have to turn all the football and baseball stadiums into concentration camps because they'll have to jail millions of Venezuelans who are going to stand with Capriles."

In 2004, Capriles was jailed for four months after being accused of stirring up violence during a protest at the Cuban embassy two years earlier. He denied the accusation, saying he was mediating there. The case was set aside.

Group calls on China to improve Internet security

BEIJING (AP) ? An American business group appealed to China on Wednesday to improve online security and ease restrictions on Web use by companies, warning that deteriorating access speeds might discourage foreign investment.

The American Chamber of Commerce suggested the Chinese government could speed up Internet access by permitting some companies to circumvent its extensive system of Web filters.

"When we compare the Internet in China to the Internet as it exists in other countries such as South Korea or the European Union or the United States, what we see is that it is significantly slower. It is also less reliable and less secure," said the chamber's president, Christian Murck.

Beijing's Internet controls and attitude toward data security have become politically sensitive after Mandiant, an American security firm, released a report in February on a wave of hacking attacks against U.S. companies it said were traced to a Chinese military cyberwarfare unit.

The American chamber warned that while two-thirds of its member companies use cloud computing, the number willing to base those operations in China has declined to below 50 percent due to security concerns.

In an annual "white paper" on policy recommendations, the chamber appealed to Chinese authorities to repeal restrictions imposed in 1999 on use of foreign encryption and security technology for sensitive data.

China has the world's biggest population of Internet users, with 564 million people online at the end of last year.

The government encourages Web use for business and education but tries to block access to material deemed subversive using filters that slow access and prompt widespread complaints.

The American chamber said its member companies have "noted deterioration in access speeds" to websites outside China and warned that will "eventually discourage investment in China."

It suggested Chinese authorities might certify companies that would be allowed high-speed international access that circumvents the filters. It said those companies might promise to use such networks only for business-related correspondence.

The chamber also appealed to Beijing to increase the size of stakes foreign investors are allowed to own in Chinese Internet and data storage companies.

It warned that security policies that "diverge from global practices" might hamper China's development and appealed to the government to embrace international standards.

U.S. officials are pressing Beijing to help combat Internet-based industrial spying. Pressure increased following the Mandiant report, which said a wave of attacks were traced to a building in Shanghai that is occupied by a Chinese military cyberwarfare unit. The attacks have prompted threats of commercial sanctions by Washington.

An American undersecretary of state, Robert Hormats, warned during a visit to Beijing this month that hacking from China was undermining its relations with Washington.

The newly proposed scientific project to understand the most complicated 3 pounds of material in the world the human brain is the topic of an article in the current edition of Chemical & Engineering News, the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.

In the article, Lauren Wolf, C&EN associate editor, focuses on the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative, previously known as the Brain Activity Map project, which President Barack Obama announced earlier in April. Sometimes compared to the Human Genome Project in its scope and potential impact on medicine, BRAIN would enlist teams of scientists to develop the technology for an unprecedented new understanding of how the brain works. It could establish the basis for new treatments for clinical depression, autism, schizophrenia, Parkinson's and other brain conditions.

The article explains the emerging realization that thoughts, memories, consciousness and brain disorders result from communication among networks of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain. An estimated 80 billion of those cells with 100 trillion interconnections complicate the task of understanding brain activity. Until now, scientists have been able to study the activities of only a relative handful of neurons at a time. Taking the next big step in understanding the brain requires new tools, which BRAIN would supply, to listen to conversations among millions of neurons.

Microsoft Surface Pro and Surface RT now shipping in more countries

Microsoft's Surface Pro and RT are striking out to more far flung corners of the globe. Redmond just announced this morning that its two Windows 8 tablets will be made available to even more markets, with the Surface RT being the first to branch out, shipping on April 25th to Malaysia and then soon after to Mexico, Korea and Thailand by end May / early June. When it finally hits that early summer release window, the Surface RT will be accessible to a total of 29 markets globally. As for its older sibling, the feature-packed Surface Pro, that angular slate's set to expand beyond its current limited availability (U.S., Canada and China) to 19 additional markets across Europe (including the UK), Asia and Oceania by the end of next month. And if you've been searching high and low for a 128GB Surface Pro to no avail, chin up, as Microsoft's taken note of your demand and is working with retailers to keep that model "consistently in stock."

Futurity.org ? Genome may show why platyfish get cancer

While humans are known for their higher-level thinking and behaviors, platyfish and other fish have evolved their own set of complex behaviors, like courting, schooling, and avoiding predators that far exceed the abilities of amphibians, reptiles and other lower vertebrates. (Credit: Valentina Storti/Flickr)

WASHINGTON U. ? ST. LOUIS (US) ? The decoded genome of a popular aquarium fish could help explain why they are prone to developing melanomas and how they evolved a set of complex behaviors.

Among scientists, the fish are meticulously studied for their tendency to develop melanoma and for other attributes more common to mammals, like courting prospective mates and giving birth to live young.

Known scientifically as Xiphophorus maculatus, platyfish sport a variety of spectacular colors?brilliant oranges, yellows, and lovely iridescent silver?and myriad striped and speckled patterns. And when melanomas develop, they are easy to spot, even to an untrained eye.

?In platyfish, melanomas typically develop as black splotches along the tail and fins,? says senior author Wesley Warren, a geneticist at Washington University in St. Louis?s Genome Institute. ?These fish are an ideal model for exploring the many unknowns of cancer, including how, when, and where it develops in the body as well as its severity.?

An international team sequenced and analyzed the platyfish genome. Their findings are available online in Nature Genetics.

?Now that we have the genome in hand, we can tease apart the way genes interact with one another to cause melanoma,? says co-lead author Manfred Schartl, of the University of W?rzburg in Germany. ?Just as in human melanoma, genes that play a role in pigment cells also influence the development of melanoma in platyfish.?

The platyfish genome includes some 20,000 genes, roughly the same number found in the human genome. But unlike humans and other mammals, the chromosomes of the platyfish, like those in other fish, have remained remarkably intact over some 200 million years of evolution.

?It?s very much a mystery as to why these chromosomes are so structurally similar among fish species over long time periods of evolution because they live in vastly different aquatic environments,? says Warren.

The platyfish is a prolific breeder. But while most fish lay eggs, platyfish females give birth to live young, often in broods of more than 100.

Complex genome, complex behaviors

Comparing the genes of platyfish to those in mice and other mammals that give birth to their young, the scientists found a number of altered genes in the fish involved in live-bearing birth.

?Surprisingly, we found that the platyfish retain some yolk-related genes typically found in fish that lay eggs to produce their offspring, and genes involved in placenta function and egg fertilization displayed unique molecular changes,? says co-lead author Ron Walter of Texas State University.

While humans are known for their higher-level thinking and behaviors, platyfish and other fish have evolved their own set of complex behaviors, like courting, schooling, and avoiding predators that far exceed the abilities of amphibians, reptiles, and other lower vertebrates.

Looking through the platyfish genome, the researchers found a number of gene copies linked to cognition in humans and other mammals that could underlie these behaviors.

?These gene copies were retained at a high rate in the platyfish, which give them a chance to evolve different functions,? Warren explains. ?In this case, we believe the extra gene copies gave platyfish and other related fish the ability to develop more complex behaviors, which is unexpected for many lower-level vertebrates.?

The National Institutes of Health, National Center for Research Resources and the Office of Research Infrastructure Programs funded the research.

92% The Gatekeepers

All Critics (87) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (80) | Rotten (7)

The film and its talking head participants paint the picture in both broad strokes and fine detail.

Whatever one's political stripe regarding Israel, it's hard to dispute the impressions and perspective of the film's six eyewitnesses.

The level of candor here may not satisfy hard-liners of either stripe, but it can help viewers begin to formulate new questions about the philosophical, strategic and moral challenges of conflict, in particular "wars on terror."

Ultimately the movie feels evasive, and its flashy, digitally animated re-creations of military surveillance footage unpleasantly evoke the Call of Duty video games.

It offers startlingly honest insight into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from some of those who called the shots.

As a political testament, the result is revealing and important.

A riveting but depressing history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

It's a depressing movie, yet there is encouragement to be found in the manifest decency and reasonableness of these six honest, articulate men ...

The former heads of Israel's military anti-terrorism agency Shin Bet break their silence in this unnerving, eye-opening documentary.

The film, though based on the exploits of Shin Bet, gives us reason to think about the drones that take out more than just terrorists.

Makes for truly bracing viewing.

A fascinating film offering a startling look inside one of the most tightlipped intelligence agencies on the planet, and providing powerful resonances with the US and UK's "war on terror".

A compelling overview of a modern security agency - bred in a moral grey area, organising state-sanctioned violence, but uncertain of the strength of its political safety net.

While memorable in sometimes unexpected ways (1980 head Avraham Shalom's long unwashed nails), there is always the nagging feeling that any revelations are being pushed or sold a little too hard.

Dror Moreh's Oscar-nominated documentary is riveting, haunting and depressing in equal measure, offering a sobering assessment of the Israel-Palestine conflict from a unique perspective.

[T]he Oscar-nominated documentary in which the six living former heads of Shin Bet, the ultrasecretive Israeli domestic security agency, talk about their antiterrorism work...

Although The Gatekeepers may not be quite theatrical nor dramatic enough for it to be highly recommended as a cinematic experience, this does feel like a film that really should be seen.

Many secrets are revealed and examined in director Dror Moreh's mind-blowingly fine film. If I have a quibble, it's that he never reveals the most tantalizing secret of all: how the hell he pulled it off.

[An] absorbing documentary, which charts the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the Six Day War to the presentday.

Insightful, revelatory and profound, Moreh's Oscar-nominated documentary combines riveting interviews, archive footage and - yes - state-of-the-art photographic effects to offer a unique perspective on the Israel-Palestine issue.

Both journalistic coup and unsettling confirmation of the idea that 'you can't make peace using military means.'

Much like Errol Morris' "The Fog of War," Dror Moreh's film is a sobering inside look inside history, at mistakes made and opportunities missed.

Moreh employs a direct interviewing style, reminiscent of Errol Morris' work, to get the men to talk about their days leading Shin Bet.

Moreh gets some startling confessions and insights from each man but also misses the opportunity to truly challenge his subjects on their regard for democracy, basic human rights and their own accountability.

Director Dror Moreh doesn't rest on his scoop
