News networks stay live overnight to cover Isaac

NEW YORK (AP) ? Some television news networks are planning to stay on live overnight to follow Hurricane Isaac and its impact on the Gulf Coast.

CNN, Fox News Channel and The Weather Channel said Tuesday they will stay with storm coverage all night. CNN and Fox usually air reruns of prime-time shows in the wee hours.

MSNBC says it hasn't made a decision on staying live.

Anderson Cooper is leading CNN's coverage from New Orleans, with Shepard Smith on Fox. All the news networks have mixed news of the storm in with Republican National Convention coverage.

The convention is taking place in Tampa, Fla., after being delayed by nasty weather.

Forecasters say the slow-moving storm could dump prodigious amounts of rain on the New Orleans area.

Obama promises to help Gulf Coast governors with Tropical Storm Isaac

A person braves the rain at Clarence Higgs Beach in Key West, Fla., as Tropical Storm Isaac hits the area on Sunday??

President Barack Obama on Monday promised the governors of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi that they would have "the resources they need" to cope with Tropical Storm Isaac, on track to batter the Gulf Coast in the coming days, the White House said in a statement.

Concerns about the storm led Republicans, gathered at their presidential nominating convention in Tampa, to hold only a short symbolic session.

Obama got a briefing with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate and Director Rick Knabb of the National Hurricane Center, which has predicted that Isaac could strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane later in the day.

In concert with the Defense Department, FEMA has created "Incident Support Bases" with critical supplies in Jacksonville, Fla., and Montgomery, Ala.; they've also deployed personnel to Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi "to work to make sure there are no unmet needs."

"The president directed Administrator Fugate to ensure that FEMA was prepared regardless of the ultimate strength and impact of the storm," the White House said.

After that briefing, Obama hosted a conference call with?Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

"The president made clear that he has directed Administrator Fugate to make sure the governors have the resources they need as the storm approaches, and asked each governor to identify additional needs if they arise," the White House said.

Obama also said he had approved Jindal's request for a presidential emergency declaration?a step that frees up additional federal resources to deal with the storm.

Frankenstein programmers test a cybersecurity monster

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? In order to catch a thief, you have to think like one.

UT Dallas computer scientists are trying to stay one step ahead of cyber attackers by creating their own monster. Their monster can cloak itself as it steals and reconfigures information in a computer program.

In part because of the potentially destructive nature of their technology, creators have named this software system Frankenstein, after the monster-creating scientist in author Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus.

"Shelley's story is an example of a horror that can result from science, and similarly, we intend our creation as a warning that we need better detections for these types of intrusions," said Dr. Kevin Hamlen, associate professor of computer science at UT Dallas who created the software, along with his doctoral student Vishwath Mohan. "Criminals may already know how to create this kind of software, so we examined the science behind the danger this represents, in hopes of creating counter measures."

Frankenstein is not a computer virus, which is a program that can multiply and take over other machines. But, it could be used in cyber warfare to provide cover for a virus or another type of malware, or malicious software.

In order to avoid antivirus software, malware typically mutates every time it copies itself onto another machine. Antivirus software figures out the pattern of change and continues to scan for sequences of code that are known to be suspicious.

Frankenstein evades this scanning mechanism. It takes code from programs already on a computer and repurposes it, stringing it together to accomplish the malware's malicious task with new instructions.

"We wanted to build something that learns as it propagates," Hamlen said. "Frankenstein takes from what is already there and reinvents itself."

"Just as Shelley's monster was stitched from body parts, our Frankenstein also stitches software from original program parts, so no red flags are raised," he said. "It looks completely different, but its code is consistent with something normal."

Hamlen said Frankenstein could be used to aid government counter terrorism efforts by providing cover for infiltration of terrorist computer networks. Hamlen is part of the Cyber Security Research and Education Center in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

The UT Dallas research is the first published example describing this type of stealth technology, Hamlen said.

"As a proof-of-concept, we tested Frankenstein on some simple algorithms that are completely benign," Hamlen said. "We did not create damage to anyone's systems."

The next step, Hamlen said, is to create more complex versions of the software.

Frankenstein was described in a paper published online (https://www.usenix.org/conference/woot12/frankenstein-stitching-malware-benign-binaries) in conjunction with a presentation at a recent USENIX Workshop on Offensive Technologies.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Summer Desserts ? Food Photography Challenge [August 2012]

This month?s food photography and food styling challenge was ?Summer Desserts?. After many weeks of debate and seeking outside opinions about what this could mean, I finally decided: Icecream sandwiches and chocolate-dipped strawberries! I was sick with the flu for 3 out of 5 weeks this month. However, I had invested so much mental energy into the challenge so I couldn?t let this mess with my desire to produce a delicious frozen treat.

Icecream sandwiches and chocolate-dipped strawberries

The drink pictured above is what I would describe as on the cusp of drinkable. I attempted to make something similar to the Strawberry Sunset at Santa Fe (strawberries, lemon & lime juice, pineapple juice, ice shaken) but? it didn?t quite work as planned.

Icecream sandwiches with flags in them

Tom and I initially made a delicious vanilla icecream which I had believed to be ?no churn?. However, it froze quite solid, so I gave that away to a hungry friend ? much to Tom?s disappointment. Instead, I used Bulla Real Dairy Vanilla Ice Cream (my favourite grocery store icecream) which saved me the effort of having to make another icecream mixture from scratch.

Dipping strawberries in dark chocolate

It was a two day process to get the sandwiches together and frozen in place. ?I?m glad I made more biscuits than I needed; one of the most difficult tasks was preventing my family from consuming the chocolate biscuits! ?In my flu-induced haze, meticulously measuring 2?4 inch rectangles and boring little holes in the top with toothpicks was not an easy task. The thought of having one of those mistakenly consumed was traumatic.

Icecream sandwiches and chocolate dipped strawberries

I quickly discovered that the icecream could not be out of the freezer for very long before starting to thaw out. ?In between styling the sandwiches and taking shots, I would wrap and re-freeze the sandwiches to prevent their insides melting everywhere.

Anyone for a summer picnic?

Remember how I mentioned that I had the flu this month? As a result, no friends or family could eat the foods that I made for this food photography shoot. Oh well? more for me!

Massively Multiplayer Online Brawler 'Happy Wars' Coming to XBLA ...

For the first time, Microsoft will be publishing a free-to-play massively-multiplayer brawler for Xbox Live Arcade called Happy Wars. It launches this Fall for the low, low cost of $0 for Xbox Live Gold members.

With support for up to 30 players on two teams of 15, Happy Wars? focus is on cel-shaded, tactical combat that has you duking it out with enemy players, taking over their castles, and customizing your character to your heart?s content.

And with three classes to select from (warrior, cleric and mage) and styles ranging from cute to comical to tough, it looks like you?ll have be hard-pressed to find a clothing combination you won?t like.

Though the game has been announced as free-to-play, Microsoft nor its developer on the game Toylogic have announced how they plan to make money on it. My gut tells me that we?ll see Microsoft Point-based microtransactions on new items like weapons and outfits, but that?s just an educated guess. It could also be ad-supported; it could be sponsored by Doritos; it could simply be free.

In addition to the game?s multiplayer offering, Happy Wars will happily provide an offline mode with a campaign stuffed with single player missions.

Happy Wars launches this fall and will be free to download and play for Xbox Live Gold members.

Extend Flood Insurance for Homeowners | Condobytes ...

Homeowners will get an indefinite break on flood insurance through an extension of the Preferred Risk Policy eligibility for National Flood Insurance. ? Rates lower than fulll-risk premium policies.? Some IL homeowners could qualify.

Insurance Net reports that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security?sFederal Emergency Management Agency issued the following news release:

Today, FEMA announced the extension of the Preferred Risk Policy eligibility under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) until further notice, as the Agency completes a study and analysis of the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, signed into law by President Obama on July 6, 2012. FEMA announced today that until an implementation plan for the new flood insurance law is put into place, customers holding existing preferred risk policies can continue to renew at the lower cost rate, beyond the previously designated two-year period. ?By extending the eligibility period until further notice, home and building owners? preferred risk policies will continue at a lower cost rate,? said FEMA Federal Insurance and Mitigation Associate Administrator, David Miller. ?As we continue to evaluate how best to implement the recent National Flood Insurance Program legislation, we encourage property owners to take advantage of this extended low rate. This way, families and businesses can continue to protect their property financially from one of the most common and costly natural disasters: flooding.?

Beginning with the first renewal effective on or after January 1, 2013, existing preferred risk policies will not be transitioned into full-risk rating. Instead, they will continue to be issued as preferred risk policies at each renewal, until further notice. Additionally, the preferred risk policy discounted rate will be available to property owners and renters whose buildings are found to be in Special Flood Hazard Area following map revisions that became effective on or after October 1, 2008. In order to be eligible for the preferred risk policy, the building must also meet certain loss-history requirements. If there are two claims, or disaster relief payments for flood of $1,000 or more, or three losses of any amount, the structure is ineligible for a preferred risk policy. Premiums for all preferred risk policyholders are being increased an average of 13 percent to maintain a revenue neutral program that also accounts for the expected increase in participation and policies issued under the preferred risk rate. This increased rate remains below the average full-risk premium that would otherwise be incurred among these policy holders. For more information on FEMA?s National Flood Insurance Program, and to identify your flood risk, visit the FEMA floodsmart Website.

Prostate cancer blood test 'can help extend lives'

Scientists identified a reduced risk of dying of almost one-third since the widespread introduction of the PSA (prostate specific antigen) test in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The PSA test identifies a protein in the blood that can signify the presence of prostate cancer.

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney promised on Thursday to aggressively expand offshore oil drilling along Virginia, North Carolina and the Gulf of Mexico, changing the subject from social issues like abortion and Medicare that have dominated the debate in the days before the critical Republican National Convention.

Speaking to voters in the heart of New Mexico's oil and gas industry, Romney declared that his energy plans ? which include drilling for oil in a federal Alaskan wildlife reserve ? would create 3 million jobs and more than $1 trillion in new revenue. And he predicted complete "North American energy independence by 2020," a never-realized goal claimed by presidential candidates for decades.

"That means we produce all the energy we use in North America," Romney said, emphasizing an expansion of oil and gas over wind and solar production. "This is not some pie-in-the-sky kind of thing. This is a real achievable objective."

President Barack Obama did not face voters on Thursday. Instead, he deployed a popular former president, Bill Clinton, to help convince a divided electorate that he simply needs more time to fix the nation's struggling economy. Clinton is expected to speak at the Democratic National Convention next month and play a prominent role in the final months before Election Day.

"We need to keep going with his plan," Clinton says of Obama in a new television ad set to run in eight battleground states.

The push to re-frame the debate comes at a delicate time, sandwiched between the sudden resurgence of abortion in the race and Monday's opening of the Republican National Convention. The event in Tampa is supposed to be all about nominating Romney, emphasizing his plans for the economy and projecting unity. But those plans were disrupted this week by Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin of Missouri, who said in an interview that victims of "legitimate rape" can biologically avoid pregnancy. Romney, who has relentlessly tried to avoid a fight over social issues, led a chorus of Republican officials who demanded Akin abandon his Senate bid. The congressman has so far refused.

The uproar raises broader concerns for Romney's effort to win over female voters. At the same time, a strengthening tropical storm is forcing Republicans to prepare for big schedule changes or even the possibility of mandatory evacuations. GOP convention planners on Thursday said they are working closely with local officials and are moving forward with the convention as scheduled.

The stakes are high, the outcome uncertain 75 days before voters choose their next president and the majorities of Congress.

Polling suggests that the presidential contest is essentially a tossup, although Obama maintains a slight lead among women. Research also suggests that more voters trust Obama's plans for Medicare than Romney's. It's an advantage that could prove significant given Romney's selection of running mate Paul Ryan, the House budget architect who crafted a controversial plan to transform Medicare into a voucher-like system for future retirees.

But Romney did not mention Medicare or abortion in Hobbs. And he agreed to an interview with CBS' Denver affiliate, KCNC, only under the stipulation that he would not be asked about abortion or Akin's comments.

Instead, the former Massachusetts governor accused Obama of crafting an energy policy designed to benefit campaign contributors.

"He's taken federal dollars, your money, to advance these companies ? solar companies, wind companies ? $90 billion in so-called green jobs," Romney said of the president, seizing on the administration's investment in the failed solar company Solyndra. "I don't want the government investing in companies, particularly companies of his campaign contributors."

That's much the same argument Democrats levy against Romney, whose energy policy favors the oil and gas industry. The former businessman has deep ties to big oil and raised more than $7 million from industry executives during a campaign fundraiser in Texas earlier this week.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith called Romney's energy plan "backward."

"This isn't a recipe for energy independence," Smith said. "It's just another irresponsible scheme to help line the pockets of big oil while allowing the U.S to fall behind and cede the clean energy sector to China."

The cornerstone of Romney's plan is opening up more areas for offshore oil drilling, including mid-Atlantic swing states like North Carolina and Virginia, where it is currently banned. He also wants to give states the power to establish all forms of energy production on federal lands, a significant shift in current policy that could face strong opposition in Congress.

Romney specifically cited drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as part of a broad plan to generate millions of additional barrels of oil each day.

A Romney campaign official later downplayed the comment. The plan would revive a longtime Republican goal to allow drilling for oil in the wildlife refuge. Congress has blocked drilling there for more than a quarter-century.

Romney also plans to approve the Keystone XL pipeline that has worried environmentalists and would run from Canada to U.S. refineries in Texas. And he is calling for the end of a production tax credit for wind power that is set to expire at the end of the year.

Many Republicans in battleground states such as Iowa support the credit, which the American Wind Energy Association says sustains 37,000 jobs.

"I think all energy sources need to stand on their own two feet," Romney said in an interview with a Colorado TV station Thursday, arguing that wind and solar power are subsidized at a higher rate than oil. "I would level the playing field."

Romney's campaign says he does not support ending oil subsidies.

The Obama administration has proposed a plan that would allow energy companies to begin seismic testing to find oil and natural reserves in the Atlantic Ocean. Companies would use the information to determine where to apply for energy leases, although no leases would be available until at least 2017.

The president told donors in New York this week that under his administration, dependence on foreign oil has gone below 50 percent for the first time in 13 years.

While the energy debate dominated the discussion on Thursday, Democrats will continue to pursue the abortion debate to help drive a wedge between Republicans and women.

Obama advisers consider Akin's comments a significant development and plan to continue linking Akin to Romney's running mate, Ryan, who cosponsored a bill with Akin to permanently ban federal funding for abortion except in cases of incest and forcible rape.

That language, which was eventually changed, would have narrowed the exception for rape victims.

Romney does not oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life, while Ryan does oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest.

Mexico religious cult refuses to allow teachers in

MEXICO CITY ?

Adherents of a religious sect in western Mexico are physically blocking school teachers from entering their walled community, setting up one of the most high-profile confrontations between religious and civil authorities in Mexico since the 1930s.

Local officials in the western state of Michoacan said Wednesday it may be time to call in a large-scale police operation to enforce the right to schooling in a community that has largely ruled itself according to what it considers biblical guidelines for almost 40 years. The New Jerusalem community prohibits formal schooling, television, radio, modern music, dress and fashion.

"I think the next step is to go in and enforce the rule of law," said Efrain Barrera, spokesman for the township of Turicato, where the sect's walled-off compound is.

Under Mexican law, grade school education is compulsory, and Mexico's National Human Rights Commission and the Roman Catholic Church said Tuesday that the refusal to allow classes in New Jerusalem is a violation of children's human rights.

They called on the government to break the town's blockade, which has been limited to fistfights but could escalate. Members of the sect recently attacked and destroyed school buildings.

"It is surprising that they want to impose beliefs, not a religion, on grade-school children in their formative stage, by taking away the right every child has to attend classes in government-provided education," the Mexican Bishops Council said in a statement.

"The local authorities should intervene and resolve the conflict, which, if it isn't taken care of, could escalate," the council said. "This is an issue that cannot wait, this is the moment to act and defend the rule of law."

The church does not recognize the sect, which was founded in 1973 by a renegade Catholic priest who objected to the abandonment of Latin masses and other modernization moves.

The group has demanded the right to appoint its own teachers, set its own curriculum and mandate robes and headscarves for female pupils, claiming that otherwise the schools would be introducing bad habits into the community. Girls at government schools in Mexico generally wear uniforms, including knee-length plaid skirts.

The group shuns telephones and its leaders were not available for comment Wednesday.

In July, gangs of sect followers used sledgehammers to destroy three government school buildings in the community, then doused them with gasoline and set fire to the school furniture and computer equipment.

On Monday, when the new school year was scheduled to start, gangs of church supporters, including women dressed in the bright-colored robes and headscarves the sect requires women to wear, engaged in fistfights with residents who wanted their children to go to school at improvised classrooms set up after the school buildings were destroyed. About a dozen government-paid teachers showed up, but were also driven off.

"They are damaging about 250 children," said Barrera. "It is not fair that older people want to reproduce and impose their own ignorance on a new generation."

There have been periodic reports of deaths, threats and beatings inside the compound, where about 5,000 adherents live in brick houses inside medieval-castle-style walls. But no outside authorities have ever been allowed to conduct official functions like policing or registering births and deaths, a situation long tolerated for a community that voted overwhelmingly for the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which has governed Michoacan for nearly all of the last eight decades.

"What we are demanding is to be able to enter and investigate what has been happening, because there have been systematic crimes and violations of the law since 1973, when the community was founded," Barrera said.

The Human Rights Commission said Tuesday it had already sent inspectors to New Jerusalem and demanded the government send police to guard the schoolchildren and classrooms.

The religion was founded by Nabor Cardenas, "Papa Nabor," a defrocked parish priest who said it was based on messages from the Virgin Mary relayed by an illiterate old woman. Together with supposed clairvoyant Agapito Gomez, who channeled voices, orders and predictions from the spirit world, they ordered the building of the compound, along with towers, walls and multiple church buildings.

Members believe it will be the only place on earth spared from an impending Apocalypse, which they had predicted would occur in cataclysmic volcanic eruptions around the 2000 millennium.

Residents of the New Jerusalem compound cannot use many modern conveniences, while women are not allowed to wear makeup, and must dress in robes and are referred to as "nuns" or "courtesans." Residents recite Mass in Latin and use old exorcism and baptism rituals long abandoned by the mainstream church.

Religious conflicts, often between evangelical Protestants and Roman Catholics, still occur in some parts of rural Mexico, and have sometimes led to thousands of residents being expelled from their towns.

But the last large-scale religious violence occurred in the 1926-29 Cristero war, when harsh anti-clerical laws sparked an armed uprising by Roman Catholic rebels against Mexico's secular government. Tens of thousands of people died.

Team of doctors set up secret Syria field hospital

PARIS (AP) ? An international team of doctors turned a villa under construction in Syria into a secret field hospital, spending two months treating wounded who sometimes traveled two days for help, a small group of physicians said Tuesday upon their return.

It took the doctors a week to transform the home in northern Syria into a field hospital, according to Medecins Sans Frontieres, the aid group that sent the international team.

"We could see and hear the shelling almost on a daily basis," said Brian Moller, an Australian anesthetic nurse on the team of seven foreigners and about 50 Syrians. Moller said they made sure the Syrian government knew about them without letting authorities know where the field hospital would operate.

"They did not appreciate or like our presence," Moller said.

Katherine Holte, a Danish surgeon who spent four weeks at the field hospital, said conditions were growing increasingly dire in Syria, and nearly all her patients were victims of the fighting ? about 60 percent suffering from explosions and 40 percent from gunshot wounds.

"They live in fear every day," she said.

Holte said many patients used back roads to skirt checkpoints and other military operations, taking as long as two days to travel 15 miles (24 kilometers).

Although small field hospitals are sprouting up around Syria, she said few have the resources of the one established by the aid group, also known as Doctors without Borders. The hospital has about a dozen beds, a sterilization room, an operating room, an emergency resuscitation room and a recovery room. Holte said other, cruder hospitals around the county learned about the villa and soon started sending their own patients.

The French military sent its own team of doctors to the Syria-Jordan border earlier this month to set up a mobile hospital.

France, Syria's onetime colonial ruler, has been in the forefront of diplomatic efforts to end the civil war in Syria. On Tuesday, French President Francois Hollande was meeting in Paris with members of the opposition Syrian National Council, including its leader, Abdelbaset Sieda, a Swedish-based activist for Syria's minority Kurdish community.

20 years after Ruby Ridge, there's forgiveness

When Sara Weaver saw her father Randy struck in the shoulder by a government sniper's bullet in the Idaho wilderness in August 1992, she began to sprint back to the family's cabin on a mountaintop called Ruby Ridge.

As the 16-year-old closed in, her mother, Vicki, opened the cabin door and stood behind it, holding Sara Weaver's 10-month-old sister in her arms. Just then, a sniper's bullet struck her mother in the head, killing her.

For the next nine days, the surviving Weavers holed up in the cabin while hundreds of federal agents laid siege in a standoff that helped spark an anti-government patriot movement that grew to include the Oklahoma City bombing.

Today, 20 years later, Sara Weaver has left the anger behind, finding religion ? and forgiveness.

"I went 10 years without understanding how to heal" until becoming a born-again Christian, she said. "All bitterness and anger had to go," she said. "I forgave those that pulled the trigger."

These days, the Weavers live near Kalispell, Mont., a city in the northwestern part of the state that is the gateway to Glacier National Park and more than 100 miles east of Ruby Ridge.

Patriarch Randy Weaver, 63, is a doting grandfather, his daughter said. Her two sisters, including the one who was in Vicki Weaver's arms, are working.

For a time, it seemed doubtful that any family members would survive the siege.

Randy Weaver moved his family to northern Idaho in the 1980s to escape what he saw as a corrupt world. Over time, federal agents began investigating the Army veteran for possible ties to white supremacist and anti-government groups. Weaver was eventually suspected of selling a government informant two illegal sawed-off shotguns.

To avoid arrest, Weaver holed up on his land.

On Aug. 21, 1992, a team of U.S. marshals scouting the forest to find suitable places to ambush and arrest Weaver came across his friend, Kevin Harris, and Weaver's 14-year-old son Samuel in the woods. A gunfight broke out. Samuel Weaver and Deputy U.S. Marshal William Degan were killed.

The next day, an FBI sniper shot and wounded Randy Weaver. As Weaver, Harris and Sara ran back toward the house, the sniper fired a second bullet, which passed through Vicki Weaver's head and wounded Harris in the chest.

During the siege, Sara Weaver crawled around her mother's blanket-covered body to get food and water for the survivors, including the infant, until the family surrendered on Aug. 31, 1992.

Harris and Randy Weaver were arrested, and Weaver's daughters went to live with their mother's family in Iowa. Randy Weaver was acquitted of the most serious charges and Harris was acquitted of all charges.

The surviving members of the Weaver family filed a wrongful death lawsuit. The federal government awarded Randy Weaver a $100,000 settlement and his three daughters $1 million each in 1995.

"Ruby Ridge was the opening shot of a new era of anti-government hatred not seen since the Civil War," said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which keeps tabs on hate groups.

After Ruby Ridge, federal agents laid siege to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. It ended violently after 51 days on April 19, 1993, when a fire destroyed the compound after an assault was launched, killing 76 people.

Timothy McVeigh cited both Ruby Ridge and Waco as motivators when he bombed the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995. Ruby Ridge has been cited often by militia and patriot groups since.

"What Ruby Ridge did was energize the radical right in a way it had not been in years," Potok said.

Sara Weaver said she is devastated each time someone commits a violent act in the name of Ruby Ridge. "It killed me inside," she said of the Oklahoma City bombing. "I knew what it was like to lose a family member in violence. I wouldn't wish that on anyone."

In the years after Ruby Ridge, Sara Weaver, now 36, struggled with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as what she called a "toxic bondage" of bitterness and anger at the government.

"After losing mom and Sam, I almost felt guilty even thinking about being happy after they were gone," she said. "But that's a lie. Your family members don't want you to grieve them. They want you to move on."

After graduating from high school in Iowa, Sara Weaver moved to the Kalispell area in 1996. Her sisters and father followed shortly after. In 2003, a meeting with a childhood friend from Ruby Ridge helped her turn things around.

The friend mentioned her positive relationship with Jesus Christ, and something clicked for Sara Weaver. "I was shocked at that," she said. "I had a fear-based relationship with God."

"I decided I was broken and needed to be fixed," she said.

Weaver began reading the Bible, where she learned that "Jesus commands us to forgive," and embarked on a journey that, by 2011, found her speaking to religious groups across the nation. Her journey is described in her recently released book, "From Ruby Ridge to Freedom."

Weaver has not spoken to any of the agents involved in the siege, and doesn't plan to unless they want to meet her.

Not everything has been smooth sailing.

Weaver endured a painful divorce a few years ago, and is now married for a second time. She and her husband, Marc, operate a quarter horse breeding ranch just outside of Kalispell. She has an 11-year-old son from her first marriage.

Sara Weaver said Randy Weaver does not do interviews and would not release a statement on the anniversary.

She has been back to Ruby Ridge, to the land her family still owns. All that remains of the family's modest home is the foundation, she said. She recalled with affection her unconventional childhood there, and her mother. "It's hard to live without her to turn to," she said. "I want to turn to my mother for advice."

"We miss her terribly. It never goes away," she said.

Legal Theory Blog: Legal Theory Bookworm

The Legal Theory Bookworm?recommends? The Voting Wars: From Florida 2000 to the Next Election Meltdown?by Richard L. Hasen. ?Here is a description:

In 2000, just a few hundred votes out of millions cast in the state of Florida separated Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush from his Democratic opponent, Al Gore. The outcome of the election rested on Florida's 25 electoral votes, and legal wrangling continued for 36 days. Then, abruptly, one of the most controversial Supreme Court decisions in U.S. history, Bush v. Gore, cut short the battle. Since the Florida debacle we have witnessed a partisan war over election rules. Election litigation has skyrocketed, and election time brings out inevitable accusations by political partisans of voter fraud and voter suppression. These allegations have shaken public confidence, as campaigns deploy ?armies of lawyers? and the partisan press revs up when elections are expected to be close and the stakes are high.

Richard L. Hasen, a respected authority on election law, chronicles and analyzes the battles over election rules from 2000 to the present. From a nonpartisan standpoint he explores the rising number of election-related lawsuits and charges of voter fraud as well as the decline of public confidence in fair results. He explains why future election disputes will be worse than previous ones?more acrimonious, more distorted by unsubstantiated allegations, and amplified by social media. No reader will fail to conclude with Hasen that election reform is an urgent priority, one that demands the attention of conscientious citizens and their elected representatives.

yellow dog, green life: Home Improvement Preview

Ever since we got back from our summer vacation a few weeks ago, James and I have been keeping busy (too busy!) with various projects around the house. I'll be sharing each of these over the next few weeks but to keep me on track I figured I'd share a sneak peek at what we've been up to. In addition to these projects I hope to finish the rest of our room reveals. We still have several more to go including the game room, both guest bedrooms, a full bath, laundry room, our current office, our "new" office (has something to do with one of the photos below!) and eventually our nursery. Lots to get through!

Uganda marathon winner gets $80,000, home for parents

Recently-crowned Olympic marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich returned home Wednesday to a rapturous welcome in Uganda, an $80,000 cheque and a pledge that his parents will get a new house.

Kiprotich, who beat the heavily-fancied Kenyan team to claim Uganda's first gold medal in 40 years at the London Games, was welcomed by cheering fans before being whisked to a breakfast meeting with President Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni presented the gold-medalist with a cheque for around $80,000 and ordered the money "be deposited on his account before the close of business today," the president's office said in a statement.

Uganda's GDP per capita stands at around $500, according to the World Bank.

Museveni also promised to construct a three-bedroom house for Kiprotich's impoverished parents who live in a remote area of eastern Uganda, the statement said.

Meanwhile, the state-run daily New Vision newspaper claimed to have raised over $120,000 from public and corporate donations for the athlete, and is aiming to collect a total of $500,000, it reported on its website.

Kiprotich, who works as a warder in Uganda's prisons, was also handed a promotion from his bosses, a senior official at the Uganda prison services said.

"We are promoting him and we will commission him soon," Tommy Ochen, director of correctional services, told AFP.

Kiprotich, who was accompanied by his wife and two children, has complained about the lack of funding for Ugandan athletes.

Like most of Uganda's top runners, he has been forced to move to Kenya's renowned high altitude Eldoret region to do most of his training.

FTC considering new settlement process so companies can't deny wrongdoing

FTC considering new settlement process so companies can't deny wrongdoingGoogle recently paid the FTC $22.5 million and Facebook was ordered by the commission to change the way it handles data, but you might be surprised to hear that both companies did nothing wrong. Well, not exactly, but by settling their privacy violation cases, the internet giants are entitled to deny any misconduct. The New York Times reports that J. Thomas Rosch, a commissioner who voted against both settlements, feels that current rules will invite "denials of liability in every case in the future." Rosch wants the policy changed so companies can't deny responsibility when settling, much like the way the SEC handles similar indiscretions. Most of his colleagues weren't in a hurry to back his opinions, but three did say that refining the process could "avoid any possible public misimpression" of how the FTC strikes such deals. The commission is expected to look at the issue in the near future, but until then, we're sure you're more than able to separate the reality from the legalese.

Nano-printer can put the Mona Lisa on a strand of hair

The process gives new meaning to the term "fine print"

We hope you're ready for that new inkjet you just bought to look positively prehistoric. That's because a team of researchers in Singapore has managed to build a printer that can create detailed color images a mere 50 micrometers across, the width of a single human hair.

Built by the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (ASTAR), the nano-printer works at a resolution of 100,000 dots per inch (most magazines, by comparison, are printed at 300 dots per inch). Each of the dots it prints is actually made from four tiny pillars of nano-particles, each capped with silver and gold nano-disks. Changing the distance between these dots alters how they reflect light, which produces different colors without having to use pigment like traditional printers.

According to ASTAR's researchers, the resolution they've achieved is at the limit of what can be discerned by human vision, and going any smaller would simply result in indecipherable smudges. You know, the kind you get from those old-timey ink printers.

JUSTIN DUNES: For the 40+ Gay Man

Dating can be hard enough at times, but the situation can be made that much more challenging for those single gay men who represent the age 40 and up crowd.??
?In a society where youth and beauty are highly valued, many middle-aged men report feeling segregated and unappreciated in dating pools, making it difficult to meet and sustain relationships with potential dating prospects

The problem can seem even more compounded in the gay community in which the emphasis on youth and brawn is amplified, causing many mature gay men to feel undesirable and like outsiders within gay circles.?They feel unwanted and that their age hinders them and limits the pool of men available to them for dating, particularly when they report being rejected by men in their own cohort for younger guys.

Ageism, or discrimination against someone because of his age, plagues many different layers of our culture?and it also can and does rear its ugly head in the gay dating world.?This ?over-the-hill? mentality is very damaging, robbing us of the opportunity to really experience life, take risks toward goals, and make the most of what we have (if we let it!). This case is illustrated in the comment of a former 29-year old client:??I turn 30 later this year and then I officially am old! I?ll never have a boyfriend now! I feel like my life is over and it?s all downhill from here on out!?

It is hoped that this article will prove all that wrong and provide you with some tips for maximizing your midlife dating success! While the reality is that ageism does exist and there are obstacles in the dating jungle (at any age), these hurdles do not have to dictate the outcome of your love-life. In actuality, your stage-of-life puts you in an advantageous position to conquer this adversity.?With your life experience and history, you probably have a greater repertoire of coping skills, resiliency, sense of self, assertiveness, self-esteem, and an expansive support system and resources. This will take you far and makes you a very good catch!

So let?s push aside those fears that you won?t be able to attract someone after you reach a certain age.?Let?s destroy that stereotype that all older gay men are unhappy, lonely, and camp out at the local strip bar every night ?trolling.? It?s nonsense! YOU make your life what you want it to be and ?you?re only as old as you feel?, as the ?old? saying goes.?Midlife is sexy! And here are seven tips to help boost your dating success as a 40+ single gay man to enhance your readiness for a relationship!

STEP 1: CREATE YOUR VISION

No matter what your age, this is the most critical first step. It?s very important that you take the time to develop a clear and vivid image of who you are and what you want out of your life, including your dating life.? Are you seeking a long-term relationship and a life partner or just casual dating? What does the rest of your life look like? What would your ideal partner be like and how would your relationship function?

Your answers to such questions will help give you the direction you need to accomplish your goals, giving you a measuring stick to keep you on track and assess your status. How much of a gap exists between your idealized vision and your current reality?

Do the work that?s needed to bridge that gap and begin the process of identifying your needs, differentiating between those that are negotiable and non-negotiable so you can more adequately screen future dating partners for their suitability with your vision.

STEP 2: BEFRIEND THE MIDLIFE CRISIS

Erik Erickson is best known in the psychology field as having developed eight stages of psychosocial human development that we all pass through as we age through the lifespan. Every age group has its own unique challenges and developmental tasks to conquer before being able to successfully move on to the next stage.

?According to this theory, such hallmarks that exist for the middle-aged man include nurturing close relationships, career management, household maintenance, creativity, and commitment to family and the community. Having a sense of purpose and passion and being able to impact the world with one?s talents is a central feature.

As gay men, many of our developmental tasks were skipped or neglected because of our retreat to ?the closet? in coping with the homophobic society we live in.?Successful integration of your gay identity into your sense of self allows you to then address those developmental tasks that were suspended until you were ready. So the next step for you is explore any developmental tasks that still require mastery from earlier years and start working at them.?For example, a middle-aged man who comes out later in life will likely experience the adolescent tasks of exploring his sexuality and practicing man-to-man relationship skills, causing him to feel like a teenager again. Perfectly normal in gay male development, no matter what your age!

And then the next step for your success is to discover something that you can do that will give you a sense of meaning and purpose and begin to express that.?Find your calling and live it out. This will be your legacy of sorts and is a great way to solidify your identity. This will help anchor you during your dating trials and can be one of the top ways of meeting a compatible partner.?Your passion and ?zest for life? will be magnetic and you?ll likely be meeting others with similar interests and philosophies in the venues you pursue.

The illustrious ?midlife crisis? strikes those men who experience anxiety and apprehension at realizing they?ve lived half their lives and begin to question and contemplate what they?ve accomplished in their lives thus far, fearing that not much time is left to live their visions.

Midlife is the perfect time to revisit your original vision and tweak it so it more accurately reflects who you are now and the man you?d still like to become. Reframe this time in your life as a time for growth and opportunity, not something to be abhorred. You have control over shaping your life into something spectacular and fulfilling!
